Alyssa Lampe storms into finals as three-day Dave Schultz Memorial International kicks off

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Alyssa Lampe is starting to peak at the right time.
The 2010 World Team member notched one of the biggest wins of her career when she knocked off 2008 Olympic gold medalist Carol Huynh of Canada 2-0, 1-1 in the Dave Schultz Memorial International semifinals.
Huynh has won the Dave Schultz event three times.
“It feels pretty good,†Lampe said. “I needed it because I’ve been kind of having a bad two years. Hopefully, this will give me some momentum going into the next few tournaments and into the Olympic Trials. It’s a good win for me. I’m excited.â€
Lampe now advances to face two-time World Team member Jessica Medina in the women’s freestyle finals at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. on Thursday at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.
The finals are set for 4 p.m. Thursday.
2011 Junior World silver medalist Helen Maroulis will face 2011 Senior World silver medalist Tonya Verbeek of Canada in the finals at 55 kg/121 lbs. Maroulis beat Verbeek, a two-time Olympic medalist, in the finals of the 2011 Pan American Games.
Verbeek is seeking her fourth Dave Schultz title.
2010 World silver medalist Elena Pirozhkova rolled into the finals at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. She will battle Junior World champion Danielle Lappage of Canada in the finals. Pirozhkova won this event in 2009.
Two-time World Team member Stephany Lee made the finals after pinning past World silver medalist Ohenewa Akuffo of Canada in the semifinal round. Lee won this event in 2009.
2011 World Team member Whitney Conder reached the finals at 51 kg/112.25 lbs.
Junior World Team member Jenna Burkert made the finals at 59 kg/130 lbs.
