COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Rulon Gardner still has a long way to go.

But his return to the mat on Saturday was a positive step in his comeback to Greco-Roman wrestling.

Gardner won all four matches, while competing in the heavyweight division, at the Kiki Cup dual-meet event on Saturday at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.

Gardner, 40, a 2000 Olympic gold medalist, competed for the first time since he won his bronze-medal match at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

“It was a good learning experience,” Gardner said. “It was a good day and I didn’t get scored on. My movement was good. I felt strong, powerful and quick, but still a little big.

“It was a blast. It’s fun to be around the guys again and great to be wrestling again.”

Gardner decided to return to wrestling after dropping nearly 200 pounds on NBC’s “Biggest Loser” television show last year. He returned to training shortly after leaving the show last year and has spent considerable time training in Colorado Springs.

He outscored his four Kiki Cup opponents – two from India, one from Spain and one from Italy – by a combined 25-0 score on Saturday.

Gardner, a 2001 World champion, enjoyed a noticeable size advantage in wrestling in the 120 kg/264.5 lbs. division. There was no weigh-in for the Kiki Cup and Gardner estimates he is still about 30 pounds away from making that class.

“I’m still big, and I need to bring my weight down,” Gardner said. “This is exciting, being the Olympic year. We have high expectations and we expect to be victorious.”

Gardner said he hopes the Kiki Cup provides a springboard for him as he continues preparations for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in April.

“The Kiki Cup was an amazing experience for me,” he said. “It was a great opportunity to get some matches in and get a feel for wrestling again. I had a chance to work on some things and hopefully it will help me as I try to get back on the Olympic Team again.”

Gardner’s past rival, World champion Dremiel Byers, looked dominant in winning all four of his bouts at 120 kilos on Saturday.

Past World bronze medalist Justin Ruiz also went 4-0 on Saturday at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.
