KRASNOYARSK, Russia – Two-time U.S. World team member Jessica Medina (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) claimed a bronze medal at 51 kg/112.25 lbs. at the Ivan Yarygin Memorial Grand Prix on Friday.

Medina finished the event with a 2-1 record. She claimed the bronze medal with an injury default victory in her final match over Olga Orshich of Russia.

Medina opened with a tight three-period win over Marina Zaptueva of Russia, 0-1, 1-0, 1-0. She was defeated in the semifinals by 2006 World bronze medalist Elena Adashinskaya of Russia, 0-1, 1-0, 0-1.

The other U.S. women’s wrestler competing Friday, Othella Feroleto (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army), was defeated in her only match at 59 kg/130 lbs.

The U.S. had one men’s freestyle participant on Friday, Sam Hazewinkel (Norman, Okla./Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs. Hazewinkel lost his opening match to Aleksander Koryakin of Russia, and was eliminated when Koryakin lost in the quarterfinals.

The Ivan Yarygin Memorial is considered one of the toughest tournaments in the world each year. Only 10 American men and five American women have ever won gold medals in this event.

In a widely anticipated men’s finals at 74 kg/163 lbs., two-time World champion Denis Tsargush of Russia defeated 2000 Olympic champion and two-time World champion Adam Saitiev of Russia. Saitiev has made a comeback at age 34, having last competed in 2006.
