U.S. draws for men and women freestylers set for day one of Yarygin Memorial in Russia

KRASNOYARSK, Russia – The first weigh-in has been held and the draws have been released for the first day of the Ivan Yarygin Memorial Grand Prix, which starts on Friday.

Two U.S. women freestyle wrestlers will compete on Friday: two-time U.S. World Team member Jessica Medina (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 51 kg/112.25 lbs. as well as Othella Feroleto (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 59 kg/130 lbs.

Medina will open against Marina Zaptueva of Russia.

Feroleto will face Zhargalma Tsirenova of Russia in the first match. Tsirenova was a 2008 World University champion and placed second in the 2011 Ivan Yarygin Memorial Grand Prix.

Only five American women have ever won a gold medal at the Ivan Yarygin Memorial Grand Prix.

There is one U.S. men’s freestyle wrestler in competition on Friday, 2011 U.S. Open champion Sam Hazewinkel (Norman, Okla./Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs.

Hazewinkel will wrestle Aleksander Koryakin of Russia in his first bout.

Only 10 American men have ever won a gold medal at the Ivan Yarygin Memorial Grand Prix.

There is excitement at the event at 74 kg/163 lbs. with the return of 2000 Olympic champion Adam Saitiev to the mat. Saitiev last competed at the 2006 European Championships, where he won the gold medal at 84 kg. He was a 1999 World champion at 76 kg, then moved up to 84 kg where he won the 2000 Olympic title and the 2002 World title. He is 34 years old.
