Corey Mock named ACC Wrestler of the Week GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina 157-pound sophomore Corey Mock has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week after posting a 3-0 record in last weekend’s Virginia Duals at Hampton, Va. Mock’s pin of Rider’s Patrick Sabatini in 2:48 keyed the Tar Heels to an 18-15 team win over Rider in their opening match of the event. Mock followed with an 11-1 major decision over Casey Fuller of ninth-ranked Edinboro and then scored a hard-fought 1-0 win over The Citadel’s Pierre Frazile. Mock, a native of Chapel Hill, N.C., improved to 20-8 on the year and continues to be ranked No. 19 in his weight class nationally.
Mark Lewandowski named MAC Wrestler of the Week BUFFALO, NY - For the first time in his career, junior Mark Lewandowski was named the Mid-American Conference's Wrestler of the Week. The Depew, NY native earned the honor thanks to a dominating 5-0 weekend at the Virginia Duals that has been a microcosm of his standout season. Wrestling at 165 pounds, Lewandowski recorded two technical falls and a major decision among his five victories, which included four shutout victories and only four total points allowed. He scored 49 total match points, the third-most of any wrestler among the 14 teams at the meet. The Bulls won three of their five matches and improved upon last season's finish with a seventh-place slot. Mark now has a 28-6 overall record (13-3 in dual meets). Buffalo's overall record is 5-11 this season, 0-1 in the MAC. Lewandowski will look to earn another career first this coming weekend when he looks for his first state championship as the Bulls head to Ithaca, NY for the 2012 New York State Collegiate Wrestling Championship. The tournament will run Jan. 21-22 and will feature 18 schools from across the state.
Cole VonOhlen named WWC Wrestler of the Week OREM, Utah -- Air Force Academy 149-pound junior Cole VonOhlen (Jackson, Minn./Jackson County Central HS) has been named the Western Wrestling Conference Wrestler of the Week after an outstanding performance on the mat last week as announced Tuesday by the league. VonOhlen led the Falcons with a 4-0 record at the Lone Star Duals last Saturday, registering a fall, a technical fall and a pair of decisions. Among his wins was an 11-5 decision over Harvard’s previously undefeated Corey Jantzen, ranked 12th in the nation. VonOhlen, who is currently ranked third by Intermat at 149 pounds, now holds a 22-2 record on the season and needs just three more wins to reach 100 for his career. The conference award is VonOhlen's second of the season and seventh of his career.
A.J. Schopp named EWL Wrestler of the Week EDINBORO, Pa. – Edinboro University’s A.J. Schopp (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone Area) has been named the Eastern Wrestling League Wrestler of the Week for the week ending January 15. Schopp, ranked sixth at 133 lbs., was recognized after helping Edinboro finish third at the 32nd annual Virginia Duals, winning three of its four matches. In addition, the redshirt freshman was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the prestigious event. In his four bouts Schopp recorded two wins by fall, plus one by technical fall and another by major decision. That gives him s 28-3 record with 13 falls, 7 technical falls and a major decision. He opened with a fall over Josh Yurasits of Drexel in just 39 seconds as Edinboro prevailed 30-6. In the quarterfinals Edinboro bested North Carolina 22-14, with Schopp picking up a major decision over Brock LiVorio 11-0. The Fighting Scots would suffer a heartbreaking 19-16 defeat to ninth-ranked Missouri in the semifinals, but Schopp came away with a fall at 1:48 over Eric Wilson. Edinboro would come away with third place with a 23-16 win over Old Dominion. Schopp contributed with a 16-0 technical fall over Eric Dunnet. Edinboro returns to action on January 20 wrestling at Lock Haven.
Alan Waters name Big 12 Wrestler of the Week For the second time this season, sophomore Alan Waters has been named as the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week, as announced Tuesday afternoon by the league office. Waters was recognized with the award back on Dec. 12, 2011, while junior Brent Haynes won the award last week. This is the first time that Mizzou has had three Wrestler of the Week winners since the 2006-07 season. Waters was a perfect 3-0 at the Virginia Duals this past weekend, helping the Tigers reach the championship bout. He opened things up with a 4-2 victory over No. 19 Trent Sprinkle of North Dakota State, as Mizzou went on to win 24-9. In the semifinals against Edinboro, Waters defeated Kory Mines by a 6-2 score, helping the Tigers pull out a 19-16 victory. Despite the team loss in the championship to Kent State, Waters scored his second win of the year over No. 4 Nic Bedelyon. The two battled into overtime, with Waters scoring the decisive takedown in sudden victory. Waters is now 3-0 all-time against Bedelyon. This season, Waters is 17-1 overall and 8-0 in duals. He is 6-1 on the year against top-20 wrestlers and has won 12 of his 17 matches with bonus points. Waters and the Tigers have a week off before returning to action on Sunday, Jan. 29. Missouri will travel to Edwardsville, Ill., for a quad-meet against Eastern Michigan, SIU-Edwardsville and Truman State, beginning at 1 p.m. CT.
Logan Stieber, Ed Ruth named Big Ten Wrestlers of the Week Logan Stieber, a redshirt freshman on the No. 8 Ohio State wrestling team, was named Big Ten Co-Wrestler of the Week the conference announced Tuesday. It is Stieber’s third-career weekly honor. Stieber shares the award with Penn State’s Ed Ruth. A native of Monroeville, Ohio, Stieber pinned No. 8 Cashé Quiroga of Purdue in 1:12 to record his team-leading 10th pin of the season en route to the Buckeyes’ 27-10 win in St. John Arena Jan. 12. With an 18-1 overall record, including a 3-1 conference ledger, Stieber has scored bonus points in 15 of his matches. Stieber, ranked fourth in the country at 133 pounds, also boasts a 9-1 dual record. The Lion All-American, ranked No. 2 at 174, was unstoppable in a 2-0 road weekend for Penn State in Big Ten action. Ruth made short work of No. 9 Lee Munster of Northwestern, blistering the top-ten Wildcat to the tune of an 18-3 technical fall at the 5:37 mark. Ruth helped spark Penn State to a 38-3 dismantling of No. 17 Northwestern in Evanston. Two days later, Ruth posted an equally quick 17-2 tech fall over Wisconsin's Matt Liegel at the same 5:37 mark. Ruth's win was part of Penn State's 43-0 shutout of Wisconsin in Madison. The shut-out was Penn State's first ever in a Big Ten dual and was the first shut-out of Wisconsin since 1958. Ruth improves to 19-0 on the year with six pins, six techs and three majors. The honor is the third for Penn State this year as junior Bryan Pearsall (Lititz, Pa.) won on Dec. 20 and sophomore All-American David Taylor (St. Paris, Ohio) won on Jan. 3.
CAA honors Drexel's Frey, Rider's Morris, ODU's Robinson and Warner LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—Kyle Frey of Drexel University and Tristan Warner of Old Dominion University have been named the Colonial Athletic Association Wrestlers of the Week for all competition January 10-16. ODU’s Jerome Robinson and Rider University’s Jimmy Morris were named the CAA Rookies of the Week. Frey, a senior heavyweight from Washington, NJ (Warren Hills) won all three of his matches at the Virginia Duals, out-scoring his opponents 21-6 to improve to 17-4 on the season and remain perfect at 9-0 in duals. Frey is the top ranked heavyweight in the CAA. Warner, a sophomore 165 from Mechanicsburg, PA (Cumberland Valley), went 4-0 in the Virginia Duals with three falls and a major decision. With his win against Bucknell he was a perfect 5-0 for the week. In the Va. Duals his pin of Hans Rasmusson led the Monarchs to a 20-19 victory over Arizona State. Robinson, a freshman 125 from Toledo, Ohio (St. Ignatius), went 4-1 last week, losing (4-0) only to the fourth ranked wrestler in the nation from Kent State. In his first week of collegiate competition, Robinson won a major decision against Arizona State. Morris, a freshman 133 from Northport, NY (St. Anthony’s), went 3-0 at the Va. Duals with a fall against Buffalo. Morris was pressed into duty due to numerous injuries on the Rider squad and is the fifth 133 the Broncs have used this season.
