Guerrero won three matches on his way to qualifying for the Challenge Tournament. He defeated Jeff Bedard (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) 5-3 in the finals.
Other winners include: U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athlete Burke Tyree (Colorado Springs, Colo./Team Excel) at 119 pounds, Mike Eierman (Colorado Springs, Colo./Team Excel) at 138.75 pounds and Kenny Johnson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Wildcat WC) at 152 pounds.
Winning his second Regional championship was Frank Trigg (Norman, Okla./Sunkist Kids) at 167.5 pounds. He also won the West Regional in Corvallis, Ore., March 26. The winner at 187.25 pounds was Steve Williams (Lauderhill, Fla./Team Excel), at J.J. McGrew (Stillwater, Okla./Sunkist Kids) at 213.75 pounds and J.R. Plienis at 286 pounds.
The winners at each weight class qualified for the Challenge Tournament at the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team Trials in Dallas, Texas, June 22-24.
USA Wrestling is hosting Regional Olympic Trials in five regions: West, East, South, Central and North. The West Regional was completed last week in Corvallis, Ore.
The "last chance" qualifying event is the North Regional Olympic Trials, set for Waterloo, Iowa, May 5-7. The competition will be held in Young Arena. For information contact Steve Wachal at 319-822-7748.
