Brendan Buckley Named new Columbia Wrestling Head Coach    CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - University of Virginia assistant wrestling coach Brendan Buckley was named the new wrestling head coach at Columbia University.  He will replace former Columbia wrestling head coach Lou Montano, who recently resigned after guiding the Tigers for nine seasons.    Buckley assisted Virginia wrestling head coach Lenny Bernstein for two seasons at UVa, serving as the primary assistant coach.  He helped UVa reach the Top 25 at the 1999 and 2000 NCAA Wrestling Championships.  Buckley helped coach three All-Americans in the two years he was with the program, including 1999-2000 NCAA runner-up Steve Garland (125 lbs.) this past season.  Buckley assisted Bernstein in guiding the Cavaliers to a 5-6 record overall, 2-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference in '99.  Virginia was 14-11-1 overall, 4-4 in the ACC under Buckley's two-year tenure at UVa.    Coming to UVa as an assistant wrestling coach was a return to the ACC for Buckley, who wrestled at Clemson as a freshman and sophomore before the Tigers dropped their wrestling program.  While at Clemson, Buckley earned Freshman All-American honors for the Tigers, going 18-15 in his first season.  He was named a team captain his sophomore year and advanced to the NCAA Championships that season after a third-place finish at the ACC Championships.    Buckley transferred to Fresno State after his sophomore year and won the Western Athletic Conference title at 142 pounds during his senior season.  He earned Division I All-American status by placing seventh at the NCAA Championship.  During that season, Buckley compiled an impressive 34-5 record and advanced to the NCAA Championships for a third consecutive year.  He won the the All-California Open and the California Collegiate Championships and placed third at the Las Vegas Invitational.  Heading into the NCAA Championships, Buckley had recorded a 15-match winning streak.     Buckley has also served two assistant coaching positions at both the University of California at Davis and at Sacramento City College.  He coached at UC-Davis during the 1997-98 season and was instrumental in the Aggies' best season ever after UC-Davis posted victories over Stanford and Southern Oregon.  Buckley helped coach Mike Collier, who was the first UC-Davis wrestler to win an NCAA championship round match. Sacramento City College placed five wrestlers in the California Junior College Championships under his assistance.     Buckley graduated from Fresno State in 1997 with a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communication and a minor in business.
