Eight high school girls wrestling teams will compete in the Mrs. Claus Duals alongside the U.S. Open for Greco-Roman and Women’s Freestyle, at the Arlington Convention Center in Arlington, Texas, Friday, Dec. 16.
The dual meets will be held on the mats alongside the U.S. Open, allowing fans to watch girls high school action side-by-side with the nation’s best women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman Senior-level athletes.
The Mrs. Claus Duals are scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m., during the championship session of the U.S. Open. Each team will compete in three different dual meets.
The high school teams competing on Dec. 16 are (alphabetically): Arlington, Centennial, Coppell, Fossil Ridge, Lamar, Paschal, Sam Houston, Skyline. Athletes from Azle will also participate if there are any openings.
Two of the teams placed in the top 20 at the 2011 Texas State Girls High School Championships. Last season, Centennial placed 10th in the state, while Fossil Ridge placed 19th.
“This is a great opportunity for our girls to see high level women’s competition,†said Chip Lowery of Coppell, who has helped organize the Mrs. Claus Duals.
The U.S. Open for Greco-Roman and women's freestyle is the national tournament for the 2011-12 season in these two styles. Many top Olympic hopefuls in both styles are expected.
There will be competition in the seven international Greco-Roman weights and the four Olympic women's weights.
The top seven in each weight class qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Iowa City, Iowa, April 21-22. Up to 77 spots in the Trials are up for grabs, although some of these athletes may have already qualified through other events.
Ticket prices for Adults (ages 19 and older) are $20 all sessions or $10 single day. Tickets for Youth (ages 6-18) are $16 all sessions or $8 single day. Children ages 5 and under are free.
