THE "LAST CHANCE" NORTH REGIONAL OLYMPIC WRESTLING TRIALS SET FOR YOUNG ARENA IN WATERLOO, IOWA, MAY 6-7The 2000 North Olympic Regional Trials in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling will be held at Young Arena in Waterloo, Iowa, May 6-7.
This is considered the "Last Chance" Olympic Trials qualifying event. It is the fifth of five Olympic Regional Trials held across the nation this spring. In addition, the other Trials qualifying event, the U.S. Nationals, was held in Las Vegas, Nev., April 21-22.
The winners in each weight class at the North Regional Olympic Trials in both freestyle and Greco-Roman will qualify for the Final Olympic Team Trials in the respective style in Dallas, Texas.
The 2000 Final Greco-Roman Olympic Team Trials will be held June 22-24, and the 2000 Final Freestyle Olympic Team Trials will be held June 22-24, both in Reunion Arena in Dallas. All Olympic Regional champions will earn a position in the Challenge Tournament portion of the Olympic Trials.
Attending the North Regional Olympic Trials is a must for any athlete who has not yet qualified for the Final Trials in Dallas. The field for the Olympic Trials will be completed after the North Regionals, except for a limited number of athletes accepted via petition.
Many talented Olympic-style wrestlers from across the nation are expected to enter the event in Waterloo. It will also give the top wrestlers from the local region a chance to earn the right to wrestle in the Final Olympic Trials. Top college stars from major Div. I programs are also expected. Three major Div. I wrestling teams are located in Iowa: the Univ. of Iowa, Iowa State and Northern Iowa.
The freestyle competition at the North Regional Olympic Trials is set for Saturday, May 6. Freestyle premilinaries will begin at 10:30 a.m., with the finals and medal matches set for 5:00 p.m.
The Greco-Roman competition at the North Olympic Trials is scheduled for Sunday, May 7. Competition will begin at 10:00 a.m., and will continue through conclusion.
Ticket prices are $5 per session for adults, and $3 per session for youth who are 12 years old and under.
