STILLWATER, Okla. -- The 11th-ranked University of Oklahoma wrestling squad dropped its first dual of the season to the second-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys, 25-13, inside Gallagher-Iba Arena on Sunday afternoon.
The Sooners (3-1-0, 2-1-0) jumped out to a 6-3 lead before their in-state foes from Stillwater retaliate by taking the next four bouts and six-out-of-ten overall.

“Again, we found out what we need to work on going forward,” head coach Mark Cody said. “Our preparation is right on the money at this point of the season. We were right in there. Coming into this dual I thought it was going to be very close and certainly much closer than it was. You can’t go out and give up pins and takedowns. We have a lot to work on and I look forward to the next time that we see Oklahoma State.”

OSU’s second-ranked Jamal Parks gave the Cowboy’s the early lead after he narrowly defeated the Sooner’s 13th-ranked Nick Lester, 4-3. Parks earned a takedown in the first and second, while Lester earned three escapes. Lester, who leads OU with seven in dual nearfalls, rode out Parks in the third.

Matt Lester, ranked No. 11 among 157 pounders, evened the score after he earned two 3-point near falls in the second period to defeat OSU’s No. 9 ranked Albert White, 8-3. Lester trailed 2-1 after the first period, but knotted six points in the second and two in the third off an escape and 3:05 of riding time.

OU took a 6-3 lead after OU’s Bubby Graham upset the Cowboy’s 16th-ranked Dallas Bailey in the 165 pound matchup. Graham took the early 2-1 advantage in the first after earning a takedown at the 1:20 mark. In the second, Graham gave up an early escape, but added a penalty point and a takedown to lead 5-2. The Sooner from Annapolis, Md., added an escape in the third to take the bout, 6-2.

In the 174 pound matchup, OSU’s Chris McNeil defeated Oklahoma’s Nolan McBryde, 5-3. McBryde opened up the scoring with a takedown in the first, but McNeil added two escapes a takedown and 2:37 of riding time to close out the match.

Oklahoma State regained the lead after No. 9-ranked Chris Perry handed OU’s 18th-ranked only his second loss of the year at 184 pounds. Perry tallied two takedowns, an escape, 2:37 of riding time and a point via a Schmidtke stalling penalty to claim the 7-1 win.

Cayle Byers, ranked No. 4, held a 2-0 lead over OU’s Keldrick Hall, but Byers earned the fall with 0:19 remaining in the bout to acquire the first bonus points of the night.

The Cowboy’s second-ranked Alan Gelogaev rolled over OU’s Kyle Colling, 15-2, in the heavyweight bout. In the match, Gelogaev tallied three takedowns, two nearfalls, a reversal and 2:15 of riding time to Colling’s two escapes.

Jarrod Patterson, ranked No. 4 at 125 pounds, gave the Sooner’s their third win of the night after he beat OSU’s Jon Morrison, 4-0. After a scoreless first period, Patterson rode-out Morrison in the second. In the third period, Patterson added an escape and takedown to improve to 2-1 all-time against Morrison.

OSU’s top-ranked Jordan Oliver gave OSU a 25-9 advantage after he pinned the Sooner’s Derek Geiges in the 133 pound bout.

Kendric Maple, the Big 12 Wrestler of the Month, remained unbeaten on the year after he earned a major decision victory over the Cowboy’s 11th-ranked Josh Kindig. Maple opened the bout strong with a quick takedown and nearfall. In the second and third periods he added three more takedowns, an escape, 4:04 of riding time and was awarded a point for Kindig stalling.

Next up, The Sooners have two weeks off before traveling to Chicago, Ill., to compete in the Midlands Championships from Dec. 29-30. Last year OU finished sixth at the event and claimed one champion in Chase Nelson.
