Brent Metcalf of the USA receives his gold medal at 66 kg in freestyle at the Olympic Test Event in London, England LONDON, England - Brent Metcalf (Iowa City, Iowa/New York AC) won a gold medal at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. in men’s freestyle at the Olympic Test Event at the ExCel Center on Sunday. Metcalf defeated 2010 Junior World silver medalist Kotaro Tanaka of Japan in the finals, 5-0, 5-0. Metcalf was a member of the 2010 U.S. World Team, and was a 2011 World Team Trials runner-up. Metcalf had a big semifinals win over two-time World bronze medalist Jabrayil Hasanov of Azerbaijan, 3-0, 0-1, 4-0. In his opening match, he defeated Gergo Woller of Hungary, 0-1, 5-0, 3-0. Team USA won five medals in the competition, which included many top Olympic hopefuls from around the world. Claiming silver medals were Angel Escobedo (Columbus, Ohio/New York AC) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Andrew Howe (Cedar Lake, Ind./New York AC) at 74 kg/163 lbs. Escobedo was defeated by 2008 Asian Junior champion Farzad Jafari of Iran in the finals, 0-3, 3-4. Escobedo was a 2010 World Team Trials runner-up. He opened with two victories, defeating Krasimir Krastanov of Great Britain, 3-0, 1-0 and Mude Qi of China, 0-1, 1-1, 7-0. Howe was defeated in the finals by 2010 World Cup bronze medalist Anuar Geduev of Russia, 0-6, 0-3. Howe, who was a 2011 U.S. Open champion and 2011 World Team Trials runner-up, is taking an Olympic redshirt year from Wisconsin this year. Howe reached the finals with two victories, stopping Chongyao Zhang of China, 1-0, 6-0 and Luca Lampis of France, 0-1, 2-0, 1-0. Winning bronze medals were Reece Humphrey (Columbus, Ohio (New York AC) at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Dustin Kilgore (Berea, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Humphrey defeated 2010 Junior World bronze medalist Yasuhiro Suzuki of Japan, 1-0, 6-0 in the bronze-medal bout. He lost his opening match to two-time European champion Opan Sat of Russia, 0-4, 0-9. When Sat reached the gold-medal finals, Humphrey was pulled back into the bronze-medal bout. Kilgore won his bronze-medal bout over Radoslaw Baran of Poland by default. He dropped his opening bout to 2010 University World champion Yuriy Belonovsky of Russia, 0-2, 0-3. Kilgore was a 2011 NCAA champion for Kent State, and is taking an Olympic redshirt year. He holds a No. 3 ranking on Freestyle Team USA: Placing fifth was Raymond Jordan (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) at 84 kg/185 lbs. Jordan was defeated in a bronze-medal match by two-time Asian champion Eshan Lasgari of Iran, 0-3, 0-1. He finished the tournament with a 2-2 record.
