The winner of TheMat.com Junior Wrestler of the Week is Mark Jayne of Elyria, Ohio.
The winner of TheMat.com International Wrestler of the Week is Steve Williams (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Team Excel).
The winner of TheMat.com International Wrestler of the Week is Sara Tolin of Casper, Wyo.
TheMat.com will announce Wrestlers of the Week in a number of age group levels, which will be posted on the web page and promoted to the national media.
Junior Wrestler of the Week: Mark Jayne, Elyria, Ohio
Jayne was a double champion at the 2000 Southern Plains Junior Regional in Tulsa, Okla., April 29. He was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the Greco-Roman division, winning with two pins, two technical falls and one decision. He beat Daniel Green of Oklahoma, 10-5 to win the title at 132 pounds.
In freestyle, Jayne won with three technical falls, one pin and a 11-8 decision over Beau Dearmon of Oklahoma at 132 pounds. Jayne was the Greco-Roman champion at the 1999 Asics Tiger Junior Nationals and placed third at the Junior Nationals in freestyle. Juniors are wrestlers in grades 9-12.
International Wrestler of the Week: Steve Williams, Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (Team Excel)
Williams captured the 187.25 pound title in freestyle at the Central Olympic Regional Trials in Tulsa, Okla., April 29. The victory qualified Williams for the Challenge Tournament at the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team Trials in Dallas, Texas, June 22-24. Williams won three matches on the way to the title, against veteran athletes. In the first round, he stopped Damion Hahn of the New York AC, 7-0. In the semifinals, he beat Eric Duus of the Dave Schultz WC, 2-0 in overtime. In the gold-medal finals, Williams beat former NCAA champion Barry Weldon of the Sunkist Kids, 1-0 in overtime.
Women's Wrestler of the Week: Sara Tolin, Casper, Wyo.
Tolin was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the Senior women's tournament at the 2000 Southern Plains Junior Regional in Tulsa, Okla., April 29. Tolin was the champion at 123.25 pounds. She scored a pin and a technical fall against her two opponents. She first pinned Brenda Malott of the AWC in 3:44, then scored the technical fall over Julie Grachanin of Lawton FS, 13-3.
