FLASH: Escobedo, Metcalf, Howe in finals at Olympic Test Event in London, England

Three U.S. men’s freestyle wrestlers have reached the finals at the Olympic Test Event at the ExCel Center on Sunday.

Qualifying for gold medal matches with two victories on Sunday are 
• Angel Escobedo, Columbus, Ohio (New York AC) at 55 kg/121 lbs.
• Brent Metcalf, Iowa City, Iowa (New York AC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs.
• Andrew Howe, Cedar Lake, Ind. (New York AC) at 74 kg/163 lbs.

Escobedo will face 2008 Asian Junior champion Farzad Jafari of Iran in the finals. Escobedo was a 2010 World Team Trials runner-up.

Metcalf will face 2010 Junior World silver medalist Kotaro Tanaka of Japan in the finals. He had a big semifinals win over two-time World bronze medalist Jabrayil Hasanov of Azerbaijan. Metcalf was a member of the 2010 U.S. World Team, and was a 2011 World Team Trials runner-up.

Howe will face 2010 World Cup bronze medalist Anuar Geduev of Russia in the finals. Howe, who was a 2011 U.S. Open champion and 2011 World Team Trials runner-up, is taking an Olympic redshirt year from Wisconsin this year.

Three other U.S. wrestlers are in the repechage rounds, seeking a bronze medal:
• Reece Humphrey, Columbus, Ohio (New York AC) at 60 kg/132 lbs.
• Raymond Jordan, Lincoln, Neb. (Sunkist Kids) at 84 kg/185 lbs.
• Dustin Kilgore, Berea, Ohio (Sunkist Kids) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.

The other U.S. competitor, 2008 U.S. Olympian Steve Mocco (Bethlehem, Pa./Lehigh Valley AC) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs., dropped his first bout and was eliminated from medal contention.
