HIGH SCHOOL STAR CHRIS RODRIGUES WINS GRECO-ROMAN TITLE AT NORTH REGIONAL OLYMPIC TRIALS IN WATERLOO, IOWA, MAY 7

High school star Chris Rodrigues (Marietta, Ga./Team Georgia) won the 127.75-pound title at the 2000 North Regional Olympic Trials in Greco-Roman wrestling at Young Arena in Waterloo, Iowa, May 7.

This was the "Last Chance" Olympic Trials qualifying event, the fifth of five Olympic Regional Trials held across the nation this spring. The winners at each weight class qualified for the Challenge Tournament at the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team Trials in Dallas, Texas, June 22-24.

Rodrigues scored an 11-0 technical fall over David Laymon (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marines) in the gold-medal match. Rodrigues becomes the only high school athlete to qualify for the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in either freestyle or Greco-Roman. Rodrigues, 17, a senior at Walker High School, will attend the Univ. of Michigan next year.

Mike Uker (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) won the 167.5-pound title, pinning Bryan Medlin (Marquette, Mich./USOEC), in 2:59 in the finals. Uker, who placed fourth at the 2000 U.S. Nationals, is originally from Osage, Iowa and competed for the Univ. of Iowa. Uker was the only Greco-Roman champion at the North Regional Olympic Trials who had already qualified for the Final Trials.

Robert Allen (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) claimed the 152-pound title, edging former Team USA member Mike Ellsworth (Colorado Springs, Colo./Michigan WC), 2-1, in overtime. Ellsworth had been attempting to qualify, in spite of injury.

The oldest individual champion was 39-year-old Steven Goss (Bay City, Mich./Michigan WC), the 213.75-pound champion. Goss beat J.T. Klein (Simi Valley, Calif./West Side), 5-0 in the finals. Goss will turn 40 on June 20, two days before the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team Trials begin in Dallas.

Other individual champions were Pascual Arriaga (Chino, Calif./U.S. Marines) at 119 pounds, Ally Sleiman (Quincy, Mass./New York AC) at 138.75 pounds, William Carr (Columbia Heights, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 187.25 pounds and Tyrone Davis (Hempstead, N.Y./New York AC) at 286 pounds.
