TheMat.com has named its National Wrestlers of the Week for May 1-7, 2000.

The winner of TheMat.com International Wrestler of the Week is J.J. McGrew, Stillwater, Okla. (Sunkist Kids)

TheMat.com will announce Wrestlers of the Week in a number of age group levels, which will be posted on the web page and promoted to the national media.

International Wrestler of the Week: J.J. McGrew, Stillwater, Okla. (Sunkist Kids)

McGrew captured the 213.75-pound title in freestyle at the North Olympic Regional Trials in Waterloo, Iowa, May 7. It was the second straight week that McGrew won a Regional Olympic Trials event, after winning the Central Regionals in Tulsa, Okla. on March 30. The victories qualified McGrew for the Challenge Tournament at the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team Trials in Dallas, Texas, June 22-24. McGrew won both of his matches at the North Regional by technical fall, stopping Brett Faustman of Central Michigan in the semifinals, 10-0 and beating Robert Pritchett of the Dave Schultz WC in the finals, 11-1. McGrew, who is ranked No. 2 on the 1999-2000 Freestyle Team USA, has recovered from injury, which kept him from competing at the U.S. Nationals this year.
