USA goes 2-2 to finish sixth in Karavaev Cup of Greco-Roman in Belarus

MINSK, Belarus – The United States had a 2-2 record in its pool and finished sixth out of 10 teams competing at the Karavaev Cup, a major Greco-Roman dual meet event held on Saturday.

The United States scored victories over Poland and Lithuania by 4-3 margins. Belarus-I defeated the USA 5-2 and Kazakhstan edged the USA, 4-3. 

The U.S. ended up third in its pool and did not qualify for a medal match. Russia defeated Belarus-I by a 6-1 margin in the championship dual meet, and Georgia stopped Kazakhstan by a 4-3 score in the third-place bout.

For the United States, two athletes had 3-1 records: Ellis Coleman (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 60 kg/132 lbs. and C.P. Schlatter (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs.

Jesse Thielke (Germantown, Wis./New York AC) went 2-1 at 55 kg/121 lbs. and also won another bout by forfeit. Brandon Rupp (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) went 2-2 at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.

Claiming one victory during the event were Chas Betts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Minnesota Storm) at 84 kg/185 lbs. and R.C. Johnson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.

Winning matches in the victory over Poland were Coleman, Schlatter and Betts, with Thielke earning a forfeit victory. Schlatter beat 2011 Junior World silver medalist Dawid Karecinski in the dual.

The win against Lithuania went down to the last match. Thielke, Coleman and Schlatter started off with wins, then Lithuania won the next three bouts. Rupp defeated Grygelis Marijus in the final bout at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. to seal the victory.

Against Belarus-I, Coleman and Schlatter were winners. Schlatter scored a victory over 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Mikhail Siamionau in the dual meet.

Against Kazakhstan, the winners were Thielke, Johnson and Rupp, with all three winning by fall.
