Freestyle Team USA will have a training camp in Hoboken, N.J. from November 14-19 at The Edge School of Wrestling.
Many of the athletes will go to the camp after competing in the New York AC International in New York, N.Y. on Sunday, or in one of two international dual meets held in the region earlier in the week.
There will be 25 top freestyle Olympic hopefuls in attendance at the training camp, as well as members of the Russian and Mongolian National Teams.
The camp will be conducted by National Freestyle Coach Zeke Jones, plus top freestyle coaches Bobby Douglas, Andy Hrovat, Zac Esposito and others.
Among the athletes participating in the training camp will be 2011 World champion Jordan Burrougs, 2009 World silver medalist Jake Herbert, 2011 World bronze medalist Jake Varner and 2009 World bronze medalist Tervel Dlagnev.
“This is our second most important training camp each year, behind the camp prior to the World Championships,†said National Freestyle Coach Zeke Jones. “We break down the World Championships and study the trends throughout the world. We update our techniques and tactics in the program based upon this camp. It is big for us. It has helped us to improve. We don’t just practice. We got to the classroom and study.â€
As part of the full week of training, Freestyle Team USA will have an open public practice and a special fundraising clinich.
On Tuesday, November 15, a public practice will be held from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Edge facility in Hoboken. Fans are encouraged to see Team USA and their foreign guests in a live training session.
The Edge is located at 417 Newark Street on the second level above the Hoboken Car Wash, with the entrance located on Newark Street between Grand and Adams. The Edge is a short walk from the Hoboken Train Terminal/Path Station and is on the NJ Transit 87 Bus Route. There is a pay parking lot at 77 Park.
The USA World Team Clinic and Fundraiser is set for Saturday, Nov. 19 from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Edge location in Hoboken. Athletes can learn from some of the best coaches and athletes in the world during this clinic. The clinic will focus on neutral position wrestling.
Clinicians will include National Freestyle Coach Zeke Jones, who was a World champion and Olympic silver medalist as an athlete, as well as members of the 2011 U.S. Freestyle World Team, which placed a strong third in the World Championships.
The clinic helps support the costs of the National Team Training camp, allowing America’s best wrestlers to maintain their edge within international wrestling.
“This will be our national team athletes helping kids in the local New Jersey and New York community. This clinic supports East Coast wrestling. The world’s best wrestlers will be in the region teaching world-class wrestling. It also allows young wrestler the chance to rub elbows with their wrestling heroes, such as Jordan Burroughs, Jake Varner, Tervel Dlagnev, Jake Herbert and many, many others,†said Jones.
The cost of the clinic is $40. Athletes can register in advance or at the door. To pre-register, contact Dave Esposito by phone at 201-963-4060 or via email at dave.esposito@gmail.com
