NEW YORK, N.Y. – The gold medal finals in Greco-Roman and women’s freestyle have been set for the New York Athletic Club International on Saturday.
The finals will begin at 6:00 p.m. and will be webcast live on TheMat.com
The 60 kg final will be a rematch of the 2011 Sunkist Kids International finals between Joe Betterman (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) and Ellis Coleman (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC), which was won by Coleman.
Betterman, the two-time U.S. World Team member, beat 2006 World champion Joe Warren (Monument, Colo./New York AC) in the semifinals, 1-0, 2-0.
In the other semifinal, Coleman defeated 2008 Olympian and three-time World Team member Spenser Mango (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army), 0-1, 2-0, 1-0.
The 84 kg finals will feature 2011 World silver medalist Damien Janikowski of Poland against 2011 U.S. Open champion Jordan Holm (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm).
Holm reached the finals by defeating 2011 U.S. World Team member Cheney Haight (Orem, Utah/New York AC) in the semifinals, 1-0, 1-0. It was a rematch of the 2011 World Team Trials finals, won by Haight.
In women’s freestyle, an intense semifinal was won by 2008 World champion Clarissa Chun (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids), who defeated two-time Junior World champion Victoria Anthony (Huntington Beach, Calif./New York AC), 1-4, 1-0, 3-0.
A 63 kg/138.75 lbs. semifinal upset occurred when 2011 Junior World bronze medalist Alli Ragan (New York AC/King College) defeated two-time World champion Kristie Davis (Yukon, Okla./Gator WC/OCU), 0-2, 3-2, 1-0.
There will be three past World champions from the USA in the finals: Chun, Iris Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 72 kg in men’s freestyle and Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 120 kg in Greco-Roman.
