This is a preview of the 2011 New York AC International in the women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman divisions, which will be contested on Saturday. Registration and weigh-in Women’s freestyle 48 kg/105.5 lbs. 2008 World champion and 2008 Olympian Clarissa Chun leads a strong field at this division. Miyuu Yamamoto, a multiple World champion competing for Japan who lives in Canada, is making a comeback at this event. She is reportedly planning to try out for the Japanese Olympic Team. Two other past U.S. World Team members, Alyssa Lampe and Jessica Medina, are also at this weight. Carolina Castillo of Colombia, who was fifth in the 2011 World Championships, is competing, as well as Jessica McDonald of Canada, a World placewinner who has dropped down from 51 kg for the Olympic year. Victoria Anthony, a two-time Junior World champion, will also compete. College stars Gabrielle Henry, Emily Martin and Emily Webster are also in the field. 51 kg/112.25 lbs. 2008 Junior World champion Whitney Conder, the 2011 U.S. World Team member at this division, is among the entries. 2010 Junior World champion Davaasuren Bayarmagnai of Mongolia has moved up from 48 kg. Sara Fulp-Allen, who placed second behind Conder in the non-Olympic weights World Team Trials, is also entered. Vanessa Brown of Canada is the top foreign athlete in the field. College stars Carlene Sluberski and Joey Miller are also in the field. Sluberski has been on U.S. Junior World Teams. 2011 FILA Cadet World champion Haley Augello will get her first taste of Senior-level competition. 55 kg/121 lbs. Pan American Games champion Helen Maroulis, who was fifth in the World for the USA this year, is the top American in the field. Ashley Hudson, who is ranked at No. 2 on the national team, has graduated from OCU where she was a college national champion. Leigh Jaynes, a 2007 U.S. World Team member, is entered here, after winning a medal at the Hargobind International up at 59 kg. Jillian Gallays of Canada is a top competitor here. Asian bronze medalist Byambatseren Sundev of Mongolia will be a factor here. 2010 Junior World bronze medalist Amy Whitbeck returns after taking last year off, and is up a weight class. Two-time WCWA college national champion Michaela Hutchison is entered, as are college stars Cianah Hee, Kayla Brendlinger and Sarah Hildebrandt. University World champion Katherine Fulp-Allen is also in the field. 59 kg/130 lbs. 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Jackeline Renteria of Colombia will compete here, after making a comeback at the recent Pan Am Games. She is up a weight class. This division features two of the nation’s top young stars, 2011 U.S. Open runner-up Amanda Hendey and 2011 Junior World bronze medalist Jenna Burkert are among those expected to challenge here. Both finished high school last year and are now moving up to the college level. Tessa Plana has had a strong college career. Michelle Fazzari of Canada is the top foreign athlete in this draw. 63 kg/138.75 lbs. Two-time World champion Kristie Davis, who boasts nine World medals, is the most experienced star in the field. National team member Othella Feroleto, whose maiden name is Lucas, is a top competitor. 2009 Junior World bronze medalist Veronica Carlson is healthy again. Past U.S. Open champion Erin Clodgo is making her Olympic run at this division. 2011 Junior World bronze medalist Alli Ragan is making a name for herself at this weight. 2011 Asian bronze medalist Tumentsetseg Sharkhuu of Mongolia is competitive here. Trinity Plessinger has moved up to this division, and has been tough at the higher division. Former national team member Vanessa Oswalt is always a threat. College star Lauren Louive has also been successful at this division. 67 kg/147.5 lbs. 2011 World bronze medalist Adeline Gray is the top star in this division. The rest of the weight class is a young group, including freshman Julia Salata of King College, who won three Junior National titles in high school. Stephanie Geltmacher has also been successful early in her college career. 72 kg/158.5 lbs. Mongolia brings a pair of past World medalists to compete, Odonchimeg Badrakh and Burmaa Ochirbat. The most experienced American is 2005 World champion Iris Smith. National Team member Melissa Simmons, ranked at No. 3. A top European competitor, Emma Weberg of Sweden, is competing here. College star Britteny Roberts has shown promise here. Greco-Roman 55 kg/121 lbs. National Team member Jermaine Hodge, currently ranked No. 3, is the top American registered for the field. He will be joined by Army teammate Nate Engel, a former Team USA member who recently won the Armed Forces title. Dmitry Ryabchinski, last year’s NYAC International champion, is here to defend his crown. Young stars Max Nowry, Nikko Triggas and Mike Fuenffinger are also in the field. Triggas and Fuenffinger have competed for the USA at age-group World events. 60 kg/132 lbs. Two-time World Team member Joe Betterman, the nation’s top ranked athlete, is registered to compete. Two-time Junior World medalist Ellis Coleman, who won the Sunkist Kids International finals against Betterman, is competing again at this weight class. 2006 World champion Joe Warren is entered, in his first wrestling event in almost a year. Also in the field will be 2008 Olympian and three-time World Team member Spenser Mango, who is moving up from 55 kg. Team USA member Marco Lara, the 2011 Armed Forces champion, is also competing. 66 kg/145.5 lbs. Glenn Garrison, ranked No. 2 on the National Team and the 2011 Armed Forces Champion, is the top ranked American at this division. Chad Vandiver, who was a past U.S. Open runner-up, has moved up into this division. Young U.S. athletes to watch are Josh Castellano and Pat Smith. Canada’s Shawn Daye-Finley, who competed at the Pan American Games, is also entered. 74 kg/163 lbs. This is a large weight class with considerable U.S. talent. Of special note is two-time World bronze medalist Justin Lester, who normally competes at 66 kg but moves up to 74 kg this week. Lester made the 2009 World Team at this division, so he is successful when he goes up in weight. Andrew Bisek, ranked No. 3 on the national team who competed at the 2011 World Championships, is competing. Former Team USA member James Johnson is entered here. So is Jon Anderson, the new Armed Forces champion at this division. Talented Kendrick Sanders, who trains with the USOEC and has shown great Greco-Roman skills is competing. Past University World Team member Aaron Briggs is in the field. Others who could make an impact are Anton Gottredson, Marco Toledo, Tanner Andrews and Timothy Bleau. 84 kg/185 lbs. Cheney Haight, the 2011 U.S. World Team member and top-ranked American, is entered this year. 2011 U.S. Open champion Jordan Holm, ranked No. 2, will wrestle, as will 2009 World Team member Chas Betts, who is No. 3. This places all three National Team members in the field here. The top international entry is 2011 World silver medalist Damian Janikowski of Poland. In addition, 2010 World bronze medalist Daniar Kobonov of Kyrgyzstan, normally a 74 kg wrestler, is in the field. Former Team USA member Aaron Sieracki, who dropped to 74 kg last year, is back in his former division. Other Americans to watch are young star Travis Rutt, who is taking a redshirt year from Wisconsin, as well as USOEC star Mark Stenberg. International competitors include Shawn Daye-Finley of Canada and Besnik Shala of Sweden. 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Team USA member Pete Gounaridis, who was third at last year’s World Team Trials, is among the top U.S. entries. He could face 2009 World Team member R.C. Johnson, who recently won the Sunkist Kids International at this division. Justin Millard, the 2011 Armed Forces champion and past U.S. Open runner-up, will also compete, as will the Armed Forces runner-up Moises Hernandez. Past Junior World Team member Robert Barbour is also competing. An international competitor to watch is Andrey Vorontsev of Ukraine. 120 kg/264.5 lbs. 2002 World champion Dremiel Byers, who has been the top athlete in this division for the USA for the last seven years, is the top American entry. Luksacz Banak of Poland, who was a 2010 World Military champion and fifth in the World Championships this year, is also entered. Brandon Rupp, who has been No. 2 on the national team in past seasons, is competing. University World medalist Pete Kowalczuk will wrestle. Jake Kettler, a national placewinner last year, is also in the field. Akil Patterson, who has medaled at this event in the past, is also competing.
