BIG 12 ALL-STARS TO BATTLE KOREANS IN FREESTYLE DUAL MEET IN NORMAN, OKLA., SUNDAY, MAY 21 

A team of Big 12 wrestling all-stars will battle a Korean all-star team in a freestyle wrestling dual meet on Sunday, May 21, at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Okla.

The dual meet will be held at the OU Field House, starting at 3 p.m. Tickets cost $5 for adults and $3 for children.

A free wrestling clinic by 1998 World Champion Sammie Henson will be held prior to dual meet from 12:30-2:00 p.m. An autograph session will be held immediately following the dual.

The Big 12 team, coached by University of Oklahoma Head Assistant Coach Chuck Barbee, contains six All-Americans, including Nebraska national champion Brad Vering.

The University of Nebraska will be led by three athletes, junior Todd Beckerman at 134.2 pounds, sophomore Bryan Snyder at 156.2 pounds and junior Brad Vering at 198 pounds. Beckerman finished second at the 2000 Big 12 Championships. Snyder was the 2000 Big 12 champion. Vering won a 2000 NCAA Div. I title.

Oklahoma State, the Big 12 Conference team champion, will be represented by Reggie Wright at 149.6 pounds. The junior captured the conference title at 149 pounds.

Iowa State will be represented by Joe Heskett at 165 pounds. Heskett, a sophomore, finished second at both the Big 12 Championships and the NCAA Championships.

Oklahoma will be represented by two wrestlers, Michael Lightner at 140.8 pounds and Witt Durden at 129.8 pounds. Lightner was the conference champion at 141 pounds. Durden finished fourth in the Big 12 Tournament at 133 pounds.

Missouri will have three team members: Jesse West at 129.8 pounds, John Kopnisky at 173.8 pounds and Chad Hertzog at heavyweight. Kopnisky was second in the conference at 174 pounds, and Hertzog placed fourth at heavyweight.

The Korean team will feature a number of talented athletes, including three 2000 Korean Junior National champion and two University National champions.

Sponsored by USA Wrestling and the Big 12 Conference, funding for the event is provided from a grant from the United States Olympic Committee and the NCAA. A Big 12 All-Star team traveled to South Korea in 1999 to participate in the Korean University Nationals tournament.
