MESA, Ariz. – Ellis Coleman didn’t compete at the 2011 Senior World Championships.

But he made the most of his experience as a training partner for the U.S. team, taking in everything he could during his trip to Istanbul, Turkey.

The two-time Junior World bronze medalist showed he is serious about making a run at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team after downing two-time World Team member Joe Betterman in the finals of the Sunkist Kids International Open.

The 20-year-old Coleman dropped down a weight class to 60 kg/132 lbs. and swept Betterman 2-0, 4-0 on Saturday night at Skyline High School. Coleman was named Outstanding Wrestler in Greco-Roman.

Coleman outscored his four opponents by a combined score of 26-0 on Saturday.

"I went out there and tried to push the pace," Coleman said. "My whole goal for this tournament was to dominate my competition. If I want to reach my goal of being an Olympic champion, I need to dominate everybody."

Coleman was one of five Americans to win Greco titles. World champion Dremiel Byers, World medalist Justin Lester, World Team member R.C. Johnson and past NCAA All-American C.P. Schlatter won championships on Saturday.

Byers downed Brandon Rupp in the finals at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.

Lester moved up a weight class and topped Andy Bisek in three periods in the title match at 74 kg/163 lbs. Lester was fifth in the 2011 Worlds at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. Bisek competed at the 2011 Worlds and went 1-1 at 74 kilos as a replacement for the U.S. team after Jake Fisher was injured during training.

Johnson earned a win over Robbie Smith in the finals at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.

Schlatter knocked off two-time World Team member Faruk Sahin in the finals at 66 kg/145.5 lbs.

The Minnesota Storm won the Greco-Roman team title.

Two-time World Team member Kelsey Campbell was the lone women’s champion for the U.S. Campbell defeated Michaela Hutchison in the women’s freestyle finals at 55 kg/121 lbs.

Campbell won the decisive third period 3-0, shooting in on a leg attack and finishing strong to gain a takedown and two exposure points.

Campbell wrestled collegiately for Arizona State.

"I think at this point, it's not just about the wins, it's about how you compete," Campbell said. "I'm happy to have won this tournament again, especially being here in Arizona, but I still have a lot to work on."

Oklahoma City won the women’s team title.

Canada’s Danielle Lappage was named Outstanding Wrestler in women’s freestyle. She won a strong weight class at 63 kg/138.75 pounds. Two-time World champion Kristie Davis placed third in that division.

The Sunkist Kids event is an Olympic Trials qualifier in all seven of the men’s Greco-Roman and freestyle weights and the four Olympic women’s freestyle weights. The top U.S. finisher in freestyle placing in the top four will punch their ticket to the Trials in each weight, while in Greco and women’s freestyle, the champion qualified for the Trials.

The Olympic Trials are scheduled for April 21-22 in Iowa City.

Andre Metzger, a 1986 World silver medalist and two-time World bronze medalist in freestyle, went 2-2 in Greco-Roman at 74 kg/163 lbs.

Metzger, 52, who won a bronze medal in the 1979 World Championships, fell to Japan’s Naoto Kasai 7-0, 7-3 in his first bout. He then defeated Jonathan Rodebaugh, 6-0, 1-0 in a wrestleback before downing Rashaud Saunders 1-1, 6-2, 6-3. He then lost to Tanner Andrews 6-0, 6-0 and was eliminated from the tournament.

Freestyle wrestling is scheduled for Sunday at Skyline High School. Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on five mats. Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo is set to make his return to the mat at 55 kg/121 lbs.
