Helen Maroulis (Rockville, Md./New York AC) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Oct. 18-24.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.
Maroulis won a gold medal in women’s freestyle wrestling at the Pan American Games on Oct. 22 in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Maroulis defeated two-time Olympic medalist Tonya Verbeek of Canada in the finals, 1-0, 0-7, 3-0 at 55 kg/121 lbs. Verbeek placed second at the 2011 World Championships and Maroulis finished fifth.
Maroulis won the first period on a takedown from the clinch position. Verbeek rebounded with a second period technical fall, getting a takedown then turning Maroulis repeatedly with an ankle lace for exposure. In the deciding third period, Maroulis countered a Verbeek throw attempt for two points in the closing seconds of the period. When Verbeek protested, the call was held up and Maroulis received another point.
Maroulis won her first match by pin over Joice Da Silva of Brazil. Maroulis came out strong in the semifinals, shutting out Marcia Andrades of Venezuela, 4-0, 1-0.
Maroulis also won a Junior World silver medal in 2011.
