GROZNY, Russia – The only U.S. freestyle wrestler competing on Saturday, Coleman Scott (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) finished with a 1-1 record at 60 kg/132 lbs. on the opening day of the Ramzan Kadirov Cup for the prizes of Adlan Varaev.

Scott opened with a first-period pin over Shamil Mutaev of Russia, leading by a 5-0 margin at the time of the fall.

He dropped a tight 1-1, 1-3 decision to Albert Kairhonov of Russia in the next round. When Kairhonov lost in the semifinals, Scott was eliminated from the competition.

He was wrestling in his second straight event in Russia, after wrestling in the Dmitri Korkin Memorial International in Yakutsk last weekend.

“Coleman wrestled much better today,” said U.S. coach John Stutzman. “He was scoring points and he was on the offense the entire time. I felt he made some adjustments and wrestled better this time out.”

Three other Americans will compete on Sunday.

Champions in this event win $10,000, runners-up get $5,000 and bronze medalists receive $2,000.
