Ken Honig, a former wrestler and supporter of USA Wrestling, wanted to bring the sport he loves with him on one of his recent life adventures.

Honig, who has reached the summit of many of the world’s highest mountains, was invited by the Paris Search and Rescue Team to join them as they climbed the Eiffel Tower in Paris. He is believed to be the only non-member of this group invited to join their climb of this world landmark. This excursion would be the sixth time that Honig has scaled the tower.

When Honig reached the 1,063 foot level on the Eiffel Tower, he pulled out some bunting and displayed the USA Wrestling logo for the world to see. The climbing team was able to capture photos of Honig showing off his support for wrestling.

"I couldn't conceive of spending a single day in life without invoking some rule for life that one learns in wrestling,” said Honig. “Be it drive, determination, persistence, planning or most importantly - self reliance - the lessons I learned through wrestling have enabled me to create a life I could never have imagined. The age-old axioms that are part of wrestling’s lexicon really are true.”

Prior to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China, Honig pledged $25,000 for each gold medal brought home by a U.S. wrestler, $15,000 for a silver and $5,000 for a bronze. The U.S. won three medals in Beijing, a men’s freestyle gold by Henry Cejudo, a women’s freestyle bronze by Randi Miller and a Greco-Roman bronze by Adam Wheeler. He was able to present checks to Cejudo and Miller in person at a social in New Jersey after the Games.

Honig also showed support for the sport by helping save the wrestling program from his high school. He intends to remain active in wrestling in the future.

“Ken says he is retired, but I know by staying in touch with him that he is one of the busiest guys alive,” said USA Wrestling’s Director of Development Larry Nugent. “Ken has successfully reached six of the seven major summits in mountain climbing and has scaled many of the highest peaks in Europe. When he returns home from his adventures, he dotes on his young family.”

Where will Ken Honig show off the USA Wrestling logo next? Stay tuned.
