PURLER ADDED TO THE FIELD THROUGH PETITION PROCESS FOR THE U.S. OLYMPIC WRESTLING TEAM TRIALS IN DALLAS, JUNE 22-24Two-time U.S. Freestyle World Team member Tony Purler (Clarion, Pa./Sunkist Kids) has been added to the field for the 2000 U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team Trials through the petition process.
He has been added to the Challenge Tournament portion of the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team Trials. set for Reunion Arena in Dallas, Texas, June 22-24. He becomes the seventh athlete added to the field through the petition process.
Article 3.1.6 of the 2000 Olympic Trials Procedures states the following: "Petitions into the Final Olympic Trials tournament will be limited to former World or Olympic Team members who were ill or injured and unable to compete or complete the National Championships. The injury or illness must be certified in writing by a medical doctor approved by USA Wrestling. USAW approval of medical doctor will not be unreasonably withheld."
Purler is expected to participate at 127.75 pounds. Purler placed 10th in the 1997 World Championships, and also competed in the 1998 World Championships.
He did not participate in the 2000 U.S. National Championships due to injury. He was a NCAA champion for Nebraska, and also competed for Oklahoma State. He is currently an assistant coach at Clarion.
Other athletes may also be added to the field, if they petition USA Wrestling and meet the requirements. There is no specific deadline for these petitions.
The qualification process for the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Trials has been completed. USA Wrestling hosted five Regional Olympic Trials events in both styles. In addition, individual champions from the Armed Forces Greco-Roman Championships also qualified. The top six freestyle and the top eight Greco-Roman placewinners in each weight class from the 2000 U.S. National Championships also qualified for the Olympic Team Trials.
