YAKUTSK, Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Russia – Tommy Rowlands (Columbus, Ohio (Sunkist Kids) placed fifth at 96 kg/211.5 pounds at the Dmitri Korkin Memorial International on Sunday. Rowlands opened with a victory over a Russian opponent, 3-1, 3-0. In his next match, he lost to Russia’s Batraz Gazzaev, 0-1, 1-0, 2-1. Gazzaev was a 2011 European Junior silver medalist. In the bronze-medal bout, Rowlands was defeated by Ivan Jankowski of Belarus, 1-0, 0-3, 0-3. Jankowski was seventh at the 2011 European Championships and second in the 2010 CISM World Military Championships. Rowlands was fifth in the 2007 World Championships at heavyweight. Rowlands was competing at 96 kg/211.5 pounds for the first time in many years. He has been wrestling at heavyweight for the last five years or so. He was a 2005 World University Games gold medalist at 96 kg. One other U.S. wrestler competed on Sunday, National Team member Coleman Scott (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC), who finished the day with a 1-1 record at 60 kg/132 lbs. This was the fourth international wrestling tournament held in memory of the honored coach Dmitry Korkin. Teams that were in the tournament included Ukraine, Turkey, United States, Belarus, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Mongolia, Kyrgystan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Greece and Russia (Dagestan, Buriatya, Moskow, Krasnoyarsk and Yakutia). Participants who won medals received cash prizes of: 1st place – $3,000 U.S., 2nd place – $2,000 and 3rd place – $1,000. The coach who prepared the champion also was awarded by cash prize of $2,000.
