Brittany Delgado of Oklahoma City University pulled out the 21-20 win for the Blue team in the Black-Blue Ranking Matches on Wednesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Delgado, a senior from Fountain Inn, S.C., pinned Heather O'Connor, a freshman from Napa, Calif. Delgado won the first period 7-0 before finishing the match 33 seconds into the second period.
Delgado has captured Women's College Wrestling Association national championships the past two years. She won the 176-pound national title as a junior and the 209-pound national title as a sophomore.
“Brittany knew what she had to do,” OCU coach Archie Randall said. “It's hard to stop somebody who's the strongest one on the team. She's a senior with plenty of experience. She's a veteran. She did really good. Brittany is a sealer, and that's probably what we'll need that Oct. 9.”
The Stars enter this season as the three-time defending WCWA champions and the four-time defending NWCA National Duals champions. OCU faces some of its stiffest competition this season Oct. 9 when Cumberlands (Tenn.), King (Tenn.) and 2011 national runner-up Simon Fraser (British Columbia) visit Abe Lemons Arena.
“It's exciting to see how the young girls performed against the veterans,” Randall said. “We had returning all-Americans and national champions who were challenged, and that's good. We'll see how good we are Oct. 9. Our young girls look really, really good. It's the best group of young girls we've had. This is an important step for our program. You could see the experience of the older girls. It makes a difference. The team is well balanced.”
At 136 pounds, Tessa Plana, the 2009 WCWA 138-pound champion, picked up a 3-1, 0-4, 6-0 decision over Amanda Hendey. Plana, a senior from Coppell, Texas, defeated one of the nation's most talented recruits in Hendey, a freshman from Beaumont, Calif.
Hendey beat OCU alum Ashley Hudson in a technical fall in the Senior National Championships. Hudson stands second on the Olympic ladder at her weight.
“Tessa Plana looked good,” Randall said. “Tessa Plana against Amanda Hendey is experience against youth.”
OCU begins the season with duals starting at noon Sunday at Abe Lemons Arena. The Stars face Wayland Baptist Blue at noon, Wayland Baptist (Texas) at 1 p.m., Missouri Valley Orange at 2 p.m., and Missouri Valley at 4 p.m. Sunday.
