Tomeo wins third consecutive Women's Junior National Title, June 2

Erin Tomeo (Volant, Pa./TAPS) wins her third consecutive title at the FILA Junior Women's National Championships and World Team Trials in Battle Creek, Mich., June 2.    

Tomeo pinned Jessi Shirley (Galion, Ohio/Northmor WC) in 4:09 to win the national title at 119 pounds.

1999 Cadet World Champion Mary Kelly (Mahomet, Ill./Unattached) pinned Lindsay Torrance (Grass Valley, Calif./Unattached) in 2:51 at 94.75 pounds to claim her first junior national title.

2000 U.S. Nationals runner-up Clarissa Chun (Kapolei, Hi./Viking WC) won by a technical fall over Sandra Szendry (Marshall, Mo./Viking WC) at 101.25 pounds by the score of 12-2. This is Chun's first junior national title.

Melina Hutchison (Soldotna, Ak./Alaska WC) defeated 1999 junior national champion Jenny Wong (Stillwater, Minn./Sunkist Kids) by a decision, 4-2, to win the 110 pound national title.

U.S. Senior National Team member Sara McMann (Lock Haven, Pa./Sunkist Kids) won by a technical fall over Tonya Evinger (Bates City, Mo./Viking WC), 12-1 to claim the junior title.

At 165.25 pounds, Dominique Smalley (Iowa City, Iowa/Dave Schultz WC) decisioned Kaci Lyle (Eurka, Calif. /Dave Schultz WC), 4-2, to claim the title. Smalley is a member of the U.S. Women's national team.

Other champions include: Carrie Birge (Omaha, Neb./Viking WC) at 127.75 pounds and Toccara Montgomery (Cleveland, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) at 149.75 pounds.

The Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament was Toccara Montgomery.

The wrestler with the most falls in the least amount of time was Alicia Mena with three in 3:54.

The FILA Junior age level includes athletes from 17-20 years old. Many of the best wrestlers in the nation on the Senior level can still compete at this level, as well as a number of age group stars. Winners of the FILA Junior Nationals/World Team Trials will be eligible to represent the U.S. at the Women's Junior World Championships in Nantes, France, July 3-9.

The Senior Women's World Team Trials, the FILA Cadet Women's National Championships and the Central Kids/Cadet Regional Championships for boys are also held at Kellogg Arena, June 2-4.
