Mini-Tournament results from the 2000 Senior Women's World Team Trials 

The Mini-Tournament for the 2000 Senior Women's World Team Trials was held at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek, Mich., June 3.

Four women in the top spot in the senior division have asked for delays for their finals series due to injury: Tricia Saunders (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) at 101.25 pounds, Stephanie Murata (Williamsburg, Ky./Sunkist Kids) at 112.25 pounds, Malissa Sherwood (Rocklin, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) at 123.25 pounds and Sandra Bacher (San Jose, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) at 149.75 pounds. They will face the winner of the World Team Trials in a best-of-three series at a date and location to be determined.

At 101.25 pounds, Julie Gonzales (Vallejo, Calif./Napa Valley WC) pinned Angela Hesener (Ann Arbor, Mich./Dave Schultz WC) in 5:00 to win the Mini-Tournament. Gonzales will face 2000 U.S. Nationals runner-up Clarissa Chun (Kapolei, Hawaii/Viking WC) on Sunday in the best two-of-three series.

Jenny Wong (Stillwater, Minn./Sunkist Kids) decisioned Melina Hutchison (Soldotna, Ak./Alaska WC), 3-1, to win the Mini-Tournament at 112.25 pounds. Wong will face Patricia Miranda (Stanford, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) on Sunday.

Three-time FILA Junior women's national champion Erin Tomeo (Volant, Pa./TAPS) won the Mini-Tournament at 123.25 pounds. She decisioned Carrie Birge (Omaha, Neb./Viking WC), 10-3. Tomeo will face Tina George-Wilson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) in the best two-of-three series.

2000 U.S. Nationals champion Sara McMann (Lock Haven, Pa./Sunkist Kids) will face Tonya Evinger (Bates City, Mo./Viking WC) in the best two-of-three series to decide who will represent the U.S. at 136.5 pounds. Evinger decisioned Tina Arnds (Marshall, Mo./Viking WC), 10-1 to win the Mini-Tournament.

The 2000 Junior National Champion and Outstanding Wrestler Toccara Montgomery (Cleveland, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) pinned Lauren Lamb (Farmington, N.Y./Michigan WC) in 5:23 to win at 149.75 pounds. Montgomery will face Kristie Marano (Albany, N.Y./ATWA) on Sunday.

2000 U.S. Nationals champion at 165.25 pounds, Iris Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) will face Dominique Smalley (Iowa City, Iowa/Dave Schultz WC). Smalley decisioned Alicia Mena (St. Paul, Minn./Minnesota Storm), 8-2.

The winner of the Mini-Tournament will face the top-seeded wrestler in her weight class in a best two-of-three series to be held on Sunday, June 4.

The champions in the senior division qualify for the 13th Women's World Championships to be held in Sofia, Bulgaria, Sept. 1-3.

Three weight classes will have a match Sunday morning for the true-second place in their weight classes; 112.25 pounds, 149.75 pounds and 165.25 pounds. The current second and third place wrestlers will wrestle each other, since they have not before, for a true second-place spot.
