Larry Slater photo USA Wrestling has announced two men’s freestyle tour teams which will compete in Russia in early October. Included on both tours are a number of talented Olympic hopefuls who are competing in preparation for the Olympic year ahead. The first U.S. team will wrestle at the Dmitry Korkin International in Yakutsk, Russia, October 1-2. Five U.S. competitors will wrestle, led by Tommy Rowlands (Columbus, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) at 96 kg/211.5 pounds. Rowlands was fifth in the 2007 World Championships at heavyweight. He is a past World University Games champion at 96 kg. Also on this tour is Coleman Scott (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) at 60 kg/132 lbs. Scott has been a member of Freestyle Team USA a number of times, holding a No. 3 national ranking going into this season. There will be prize money in this event, with champions earning $3,000, runners-up earning $2,000 and bronze medalists earning $1,000. A second U.S. freestyle team will travel to Grozny, Russia to compete at the Ramzan Kadyrov Cup for the prizes of Adlan Varaev, October 8-9. Coleman Scott is among five U.S. athletes scheduled to compete there. Another top star on the tour is Keith Gavin (Bethlehem, Pa./Lehigh Valley AC), a national team member who is currently ranked No. 3 nationally at 84 kg/185 lbs. Prize money is also offered at this event, with $20,000 going to champions, $5,000 to runners-up and $2,000 to bronze medalists. Additional fall tours will be announced as finalized.
