One of the world team spots decided was at 136.5 pounds. 2000 U.S. Nationals champion McMann first won by a technical fall over Tonya Evinger (Bates City, Mo./Viking WC), 11-1, and then by another technical fall, 11-0. This is McMann's first year on the world team.
Smith made her first world team when she defeated Dominique Smalley (Iowa City, Iowa/Dave Schultz WC) in the best-of-three series. She first won by a technical fall, 14-3, and then won by a technical fall, 11-0.
Four women in the top spot in the senior division have asked for delays for their finals series due to injury: Tricia Saunders (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) at 101.25 pounds, Stephanie Murata (Williamsburg, Ky./Sunkist Kids) at 112.25 pounds, Malissa Sherwood (Rocklin, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) at 123.25 pounds and Sandra Bacher (San Jose, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) at 149.75 pounds. They will face the winner of the World Team Trials in a best-of-three series at a date and location to be determined.
At 101.25 pounds, Clarissa Chun (Kapolei, Hi./Viking WC) decisioned Julie Gonzales (Vallejo, Calif./Napa Valley WC), 5-4 and won by a pin in 5:40. Chun will now face four-time World Champion Saunders in a best two-of-three series. This will be a re-match of the 2000 U.S. Nationals finals, won by Saunders.
Patricia Miranda (Stanford, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) decisioned Jenny Wong (Stillwater, Minn./Sunkist Kids), 4-3 in overtime in the first match at 112.25 pounds and 4-3 in the second match. Miranda will face Murata to decide who will represent the U.S. on the world team.
At 123.25 pounds, Tina George-Wilson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) decisioned Erin Tomeo (Volant, Pa./TAPS), 3-2 in the first match and 9-2. George-Wilson will face Sherwood in the next series.
Four-time World silver-medalist Kristie Marano (Albany, N.Y./ATWA) first lost by a pin to Toccara Montgomery (Cleveland, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) in 5:37 and then won by a technicall fall, 14-4, and won by pin in 2:10. Marano will face Bacher in the series.
The champions in the senior division qualify for the 13th Women's World Championships to be held in Sofia, Bulgaria, Sept. 1-3.
Three weight classes had a match Sunday morning for the "true-second place" in their weight classes; 112.25 pounds, 149.75 pounds and 165.25 pounds. At 112.25 pounds, Melina Hutchison (Soldotna, Ak./Alaska WC) decisioned Afsoon Johnston (San Diego, Calif./Sunkist Kids), 3-1. Lauren Lamb (Farmington, N.Y./Michigan WC) decisioned Teri Kleinberg (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Unattached), 7-1 at 149.75 pounds and Melanie Macari (Marshall, Mo./Viking WC) pinned Alicia Mena (St. Paul, Minn./Minnesota Storm) in 1:05 to win at 165.25 pounds.
