He also won the U.S. Open and U.S. World Team Trials in freestyle wrestling. So what more can he possibly do for an encore during this magical season? Win his first World title. Burroughs turned in a sensational run by defeating four tough opponents to advance to the finals of the World Championships on Sunday at the Sinan Erdem Dome. U.S. teammate Tervel Dlagnev will wrestle for a bronze medal at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. on the final night of the seven-day tournament. He won a World bronze medal in 2009. The medal matches can be seen live on ESPN3.com, starting at 12:30 p.m. Eastern Time. The U.S. is in third place in the team race with 37 points. Russia leads with 43 points and Iran is second with 40. Burroughs outlasted Ashraf Aliyev of Azerbaijan 0-1, 5-4, 3-0 in a wild semifinal match at 74 kg/163 lbs. He will face Iran’s Sadegh Goudarzi in the gold-medal match on Sunday night in Turkey. Goudarzi won a silver medal in this event last year and a bronze in 2009. Burroughs (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) broke Aliyev in the third period of the semifinals, scoring three takedowns to put the match away. Burroughs, 23, competing in his first Senior World Championships, pulled out a dramatic win over two-time World champion Denis Tsargush of Russia 1-3, 1-0, 2-1 in the second round at 74 kg/163 lbs. Burroughs scored two third-period takedowns to start the period before pulling out the clutch victory. The U.S. is looking for its first World freestyle title since Bill Zadick won a World title at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. in 2006. American Henry Cejudo won an Olympic title in freestyle wrestling in 2008. Dlagnev (Columbus, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) scored a huge quarterfinal win by downing two-time Olympic champion and World champion Artur Taymazov of Uzbekistan 0-1, 2-1, 1-0. Dlagnev, 25, then lost to Alexei Shemarov of Belarus 1-0, 1-0 in the semifinal round at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Both periods were scoreless after two minutes. Shemarov won two ball draws and finished in the leg clinch both times to win the match. Dlagnev beat Marid Mutalimov of Kazakhstan in his second match. Mutalimov was third in 2008 Olympics. Dlagnev will face Davit Modzmanashvili of Georgia in the bronze-medal match. American Teyon Ware (State College, Pa./Nittany Lion WC) dropped a first-round decision to 2008 Olympic silver medalist Andriy Stadnik of Ukraine. Stadnik won 2-1, 4-0 at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. Stadnik lost in the quarterfinals, eliminating Ware from the tournament. Ware, a two-time NCAA champion for Oklahoma, was competing in his first World Championships.
