Jake Fisher (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) suffered an injury during training in Greece and will not be able to compete at 74 kg/163 lbs. in Greco-Roman at the World Wrestling Championships in Istanbul, Turkey.
Fisher severely injured a foot during the U.S. Greco-Roman World Team practice during its Acclimation Camp in Komotini, Greece. He is not medically able to compete.
He was scheduled to compete at the World Championships on Wednesday, September 14. Fisher was also a member of the 2010 U.S. World Team at this weight class.
“We all feel the pain of Jake Fisher’s foot injury. Jake was preparing and training extremely well and was on track to a great performance at the Worlds next week,†said National Greco-Roman Coach Steve Fraser. "He is coping with this very disappointing setback with great professionalism and a strong attitude."
In compliance with USA Wrestling’s World Team Trials procedures, the position was assigned to the next ranked alternate at the weight. In this case, after consultation with the No. 2 ranked athlete Ben Provisor, a decision was made to provide the opportunity to the next ranked athlete, No. 3 ranked Andy Bisek.
"Ben Provisor would have gladly stepped in if he could have. On such short notice, Ben didn’t feel he would be sufficiently prepared for his optimal performance. He felt it was best for our U.S. team's effort to yield his position to Bisek," said Fraser.
Bisek (Colorado Springs, Colo./Minnesota Storm) is currently in training with the U.S. World Team in Greece, and will be entered in the tournament at 74 kg/163 lbs.
"Andy Bisek has been training and acclimating right alongside Jake and will step in to replace him with great confidence and vigor in this eleventh hour," said Fraser.
Bisek placed third in the U.S. World Team Trials and the U.S. Open at this weight class in both 2010 and 2011. He was second in the U.S. Open in 2008.
This season, he won bronze medals at the Ion Corneanu Memorial International in Romania and the Hungarian Grand Prix, and placed fourth at the Dave Schultz Memorial International. Bisek has won the New York AC International the last two years and was a 2010 Sunkist Kids International champion.
Prior to joining the U.S. Olympic Training Center resident program, Bisek was a student at Northern Michigan University, where he was a member of the U.S. Olympic Education Center Greco-Roman program. A native of Chaska, Minn., he placed third in the Minnesota state high school championships in 2004.
