SZOMBATHELY, Hungary – Matthew Rundell of Schaumberg, Ill. placed eighth at 46 kg/101.25 lbs. in Greco-Roman, the top U.S. performance on the final day of FILA Cadet World Championships on Sunday.

Rundell opened with a victory over Mario Stjepic of Croatia, 0-2, 6-0, 7-0 then was defeated by Kasutoshi Ichioka of Japan, 0-1, 9-3, 0-6. When Ichioka failed to make the finals, Rundell was not eligible for the repechage rounds.

The other three U.S. wrestlers on Sunday dropped their opening bouts, and were later eliminated when their opponents failed to reach the finals: Darius Henry of Illinois at 54 kg/119 lbs., Mitchell Alexander of Illinois at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. and Adam Coon of Michigan at 100 kg/220 lbs.

Coon was a Cadet World champion in freestyle on Wednesday, and was attempting to win a second medal during the tournament.

There was also competition at 76 kg/167.5 lbs., but the United States did not have an entry in that division.

The United States placed 26th in the team standings with three points. Azerbaijan won the team title with 65 points, followed by Russia with 57 points and Iran with 53 points.

Coaching the Greco-Roman team was Mel Dow of Stoughton, Wis. along with National Greco-Roman Developmental Coach Ike Anderson of Colorado Springs, Colo.
