SZOMBATHELY, Hungary – The final four U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers entered at the FILA Cadet World Championships on Sunday were defeated in the preliminary rounds and later eliminated from competition when their opponents failed to reach the finals.

At 46 kg/101.25 lbs., Matthew Rundell of Schaumberg, Ill. opened with a victory over Mario Stjepic of Croatia, 0-2, 6-0, 7-0 then was defeated by Kasutoshi Ichioka of Japan, 0-1, 9-3, 0-6.

Dropping their opening bouts were Darius Henry of Illinois at 54 kg/119 lbs., Mitchell Alexander of Illinois at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. and Adam Coon of Michigan at 100 kg/220 lbs.

In each case, the athlete which the U.S. wrestler lost to was unable to reach the finals, which eliminated the U.S. wrestlers from the repechage round.

Coon was a Cadet World champion in freestyle on Wednesday, and was attempting to win a second medal during the tournament.

There was also competition at 76 kg/167.5 lbs., but the United States did not have an entry in that division.

Coaching the Greco-Roman team is Mel Dow of Stoughton, Wis. along with National Greco-Roman Developmental Coach Ike Anderson of Colorado Springs, Colo.
