Augello wins gold, Doi silver & McFarland is fifth among women at Cadet Worlds in Hungary

SZOMBATHELY, Hungary – Haley Augello of Illinois won a gold medal at 46 kg/101.25 lbs. during Friday’s competition at the FILA Cadet World Championships.

Augello defeated Sachi Katagiri of Japan in the gold-medal finals, 2-6, 4-0, 1-0. After losing the first period, Augello shut out Katagiri to sweep the final two periods and earn the gold medal.

Augello won three matches to reach the finals. She opened with wins over Nazgul Nurakhan of Kazakhstan and Ritu Ritu of India. In the semifinals, she stopped Doina Roscovanu of Moldova, 1-0, 3-1. 

Augello won her second straight Junior Nationals title in Fargo, N.D. this summer, and was a Body Bar FILA Cadet Nationals champion in Kissimmee, Fla. in the spring. She competes for the New York Athletic Club, and trains at Team Overtime in Illinois.

She won the second gold medal for the United States during the championships. Adam Coon was a Cadet World champion in men’s freestyle at 100 kg/220 lbs. on Wednesday.

Marina Doi of California won a silver medal at 40 kg/88 lbs. She was defeated in the championship finals by Mariya Georgiyeva of Ukraine, 1-2, 2-5.

Doi won two bouts to reach the finals, stopping Umut Nuraly Kyzy of Kyrgyzstan, 3-0, 6-0 and Anya Munkuyeva of Russia, 1-0, 3-0. 

Doi was a Cadet Nationals champion in Fargo in July, a FILA Cadet Nationals champion in Kissimmee in April and also won a Pan American Cadet title this year.

Rachel McFarland of Michigan placed fifth at 52 kg/114.5 lbs. after losing a close battle in the bronze-medal round to Petra Maarit Olli of Finland, 0-1, 0-1.

McFarland was beaten in her first match by Risako Kawai of Japan. When Kawai reached the finals, McFarland was pulled back into the repechage round, where she stopped Ozlem Gozdag of Turkey, 1-0, 2-0.

McFarland was a FILA Cadet Nationals champion in April and was third at the Junior Nationals in Fargo this summer.

Two U.S. wrestlers competing on Friday were eliminated from medal contention, Katie Germain of Florida at 60 kg/132.25 lbs. and .Mary Westman of New York at 70 kg/154 lbs. 

Westman finished 10th in the final standings in her division, while Germain did not reach the top 10 at hers.

The United States finished seventh in the team standings with 33 points. Winning trophies were team champion Russia with 72 points, runner-up Japan with 65 points and third-place Ukraine with 64 points.

Coaching the women’s team was Donny Stephens of West Covina, Calif. along with USOEC Women’s Assistant Coach Tony DeAnda of Marquette, Mich.

The United States now has won four medals at the Cadet World Championships this week, two in women’s freestyle and two in men’s freestyle.

The Greco-Roman competition will be held on Saturday and Sunday, closing out this year’s Cadet World Championships.
