SZOMBATHELY, Hungary – Three U.S. women are in medal matches during Friday’s competition at the FILA Cadet World Championships.

Reaching the gold-medal finals are Marina Doi of California at 40 kg/88 lbs. and Haley Augello of Illinois at 46 kg/101.25 lbs.

Qualifying for a bronze-medal match is Rachel McFarland of Michigan at 52 kg/114.5 lbs.

Doi won two bouts to reach the finals, stopping Umut Nuraly Kyzy of Kyrgyzstan, 3-0, 6-0 and Anya Munkuyeva of Russia, 1-0, 3-0. In the gold-medal finals she will face Mariya Georgiyeva of Ukraine.

Doi was a Cadet Nationals champion in Fargo in July, and also won a Pan American Cadet title this year.

Augello won three matches to reach the finals. She opened with wins over Nazgul Nurakhan of Kazakhstan and Ritu Ritu of India. In the semifinals, she stopped Doina Roscovanu of Moldova, 1-0, 3-1. She will face Sachi Katagiri of Japan in the finals.

Augello won her second straight Junior Nationals title in Fargo, N.D. this summer.

McFarland was beaten in her first match by Risako Kawai of Japan. When Kawai reached the finals, McFarland was pulled back into the repechage round, where she stopped Ozlem Gozdag of Turkey, 1-0, 2-0. McFarland will battle Petra Maarit Olli of Finland in the bronze-medal round.

Two U.S. wrestlers competing on Friday were eliminated from medal contention, Katie Germain of Florida at 60 kg/132.25 lbs. and ., Mary Westman of New York at 70 kg/154 lbs. 

All five of the U.S. women competing on Friday were Body Bar FILA Cadet Nationals champions in Kissimmee, Fla. this year.

Coaching the women’s team is Donny Stephens of West Covina, Calif. along with USOEC Women’s Assistant Coach Tony DeAnda of Marquette, Mich.

Friday is the final day of competition in the women’s division. The Greco-Roman competition will be held on Saturday and Sunday.
