John Sachs photo SZOMBATHELY, Hungary – Adam Coon of Fowlerville, Mich. won a gold medal at 100 kg/220 lbs. in freestyle at the FILA Cadet World Championships on Wednesday. Coon pinned Geno Petriashvili of Georgia with the gold medal finals. Coon trailed 4-0 in the first period, then took Petriashvili to his back with a bodylock to secure a first-period fall. He opened the meet with victories over Phool Kawar Mandeep of India and Akbar Elubaiulu of Kazakhstan. In the semifinals, he scored a clutch victory over Mojtaba Moradi of Iran. Coon was a FILA Cadet Nationals champion in freestyle this year. He was a Junior Nationals Greco-Roman champion and third in the Junior Nationals in freestyle. Coon also won a Pan American Cadet freestyle title this summer in Mexico. FILA Cadets are athletes who are 15-17 years old. FILA is hosting a Cadet World Championships for the first time since 1999. Coon becomes the first U.S. Cadet World Champion since 1999, when Justin Lester won a men’s freestyle gold medal and Mary Kelly won a women’s freestyle gold medal. Joey Lavallee of Reno, Nev. placed fifth at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. He was edged in a bronze-medal match by Surander Singh Parveen of India, 0-1, 0-1. Lavallee opened with a win over Sergiy Ponomarenko of Ukraine, then was defeated by Kazbek Tashyev of Russia. When Tashyev made the finals, Lavallee was drawn into the repechage rounds. Lavalle defeated Iurie Cernica of Moldova, 0-1, 2-0, 1-0 to qualify for the bronze-medal round. Lavallee was a FILA Cadet Nationals champion this past spring. He was also fifth in the Junior Nationals in freestyle this past summer. Three U.S. wrestlers were beaten in the preliminary rounds and were not able to enter the repechage rounds when their opponent failed to reach the finals: Tommy Thorn of St. Michael, Minn. at 46 kg/101.25 lbs., Thomas Gilman of Omaha, Neb. at 54 kg/119 lbs. and Jordan Rogers of Spokane, Wash. at 76 kg/167.5 lbs. Thorn finished seventh in the standings with a 2-1 record in the tournament. Gilman finished 10th in his weight class with a 1-1 record. Rogers, who lost his first match to a Russian opponent and was unable to wrestle back, did not place. The United States placed fifth in the final team standings with 49 points. Russia won the title with 79 points, followed by Iran with 69, India with 65 and Kazakhstan with 56. The U.S. finished with two medals, Coon’s gold medal and a bronze medal by Sam Brooks of Oak Park, Ill. at 85 kg/187.25 lbs. on Tuesday. Nine of the 10 U.S. men’s freestyle entries placed in the top 10 of their divisions. Serving as coach of the team is 1976 Olympic champion and 1972 Olympic silver medalist John Peterson of Comstock, Wis., along with National Freestyle Developmental Coach Bill Zadick of Colorado Springs, Colo.
