SZOMBATHELY, Hungary –Adam Coon of Fowlerville, Mich. has reached the gold-medal finals at 100 kg/220 lbs. in freestyle at the FILA Cadet World Championships on Wednesday. Coon won three straight matches to reach the finals, where he will face Geno Petriashvili of Georgia with the gold medal up for grabs. He opened the meet with victories over Phool Kawar Mandeep of India and Akbar Elubaiulu of Kazakhstan. In the semifinals, he scored a clutch victory over Mojtaba Moradi of Iran, 1-0, 2-2. Coon was a FILA Cadet Nationals champion in freestyle this year. He was a Junior Nationals Greco-Roman champion and third in the Junior Nationals in freestyle. Coon also won a Pan American Cadet freestyle title this summer in Mexico. FILA Cadets are athletes who are 15-17 years old. FILA is hosting a Cadet World Championships for the first time since 1999. This is the final day of the men’s freestyle competition. Competing for a bronze medal will be Joey Lavallee of Reno, Nev. at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. Lavallee opened with a win over Sergiy Ponomarenko of Ukraine, then was defeated by Kazbek Tashyev of Russia. When Tashyev made the finals, Lavallee was drawn into the repechage rounds. Lavalle defeated Iurie Cernica of Moldova, 0-1, 2-0, 1-0 in his repechage bout. He will face Surander Singh Parveen of India in the bronze-medal round. Three U.S. wrestlers were beaten in the preliminary rounds and were not able to enter the repechage rounds when their opponent failed to reach the finals: Tommy Thorn of St. Michael, Minn. at 46 kg/101.25 lbs. and Thomas Gilman of Omaha, Neb. at 54 kg/119 lbs. and Jordan Rogers of Spokane, Wash. at 76 kg/167.5 lbs. Thorn opened with wins over opponents from Mongolia and Moldova, then was defeated in the quarterfinals by Younes Sarmastidizaji of Iran. Sarmastidizaji was beaten in the semifinals, knocking Thorn out of the tournament. Gilman had a first-round win over an opponent from Uzbekistan, but fell in the next round to Shota Phartenzadze of Georgia. Phartenzadze lost his next match, and Gilman was not eligible for the repechage. Rogers lost his opening bout to Artem Umarov of Russia, 1-2, 0-3. Umarov made the semifinals, but was beaten by Elkhan Asadov of Kazakhstan, which eliminated Rogers from the repechage. The U.S. won a bronze medal on the first day of freestyle from Sam Brooks of Oak Park, at 85 kg/187.25 lbs. Check back for updates from the medal rounds.
