Final five U.S. freestylers receive draws at FILA Cadet Worlds in Hungary

SZOMBATHELY, Hungary – The final five U.S. men’s freestyle wrestlers have weighed in and received their draws for the FILA Cadet World Championships on Wednesday.

FILA Cadets are athletes who are 15-17 years old. Many of the nation’s top high school wrestlers compete at this level. 

All five of the wrestlers competing on Wednesday won FILA Cadet Nationals titles in freestyle in Akron, Ohio in April.

Thomas Gilman of Nebraska, who won a Junior Nationals freestyle titles in Fargo, N.D. this summer, will open his competition at 54 kg/119 lbs. against Zokir Mansurov of Uzbekistan.

Junior Nationals runner-up Jordan Rogers of Washington, will compete against Artem Umarov of Russia in his opening bout at 76 kg/167.5 lbs. Rogers was second at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games.

Adam Coon of Michigan will face Phool Kawar Mandeep of India in the first round at 100 kg/220 lbs. Coon won a Pan American Cadet freestyle title this summer in Mexico.

Also competing are Tommy Thorn of Minnesota at 46 kg/101.25 lbs. and Joey Lavallee of Nevada at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.

Thorn opens with Zandanbud Zanabazar of Mongolia in the first match, while Lavallee faces Sergiy Ponomarenko of Ukraine in his opening bout.

The freestyle competition concludes on Wednesday. Women’s freestyle competition will be held on Thursday, August 25 and Friday, August 26. Greco-Roman competition is set for Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, August 28.

This is the first time that FILA has hosted a Cadet World Championships since 1999.
