The United States will enter teams in all three Olympic styles at the FILA Cadet World Championships in Szombathely, Hungary, August 23-28.

FILA Cadets are athletes who are 15-17 years old. Many of the nation’s top high school wrestlers compete at this level. The U.S. teams in all three styles are currently in training for the event, with the men in Colorado Springs, Colo. and the women in Marquette, Mich.

The U.S. men’s teams were set at the 2011 FILA Cadet Nationals in Akron, Ohio in April, while the women’s team was set at the 2011 Body Bar FILA Cadet Women’s Nationals in Kissimmee, Fla. in May.

Freestyle competition will be held on Tuesday, August 23 and Friday, August 24. Women’s freestyle competition will be held on Thursday, August 25 and Friday, August 26. Greco-Roman competition is set for Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, August 28.

In men’s freestyle, all 10 team members won FILA Cadet Nationals titles in freestyle in Akron, Ohio in April. Many have also had impressive summer wrestling performances at other age levels.

Gannon Volk of Minnesota, competing at 42 kg/92.5 lbs., was a 2011 Cadet Triple Crown winner, claiming USA Wrestling national titles in folkstyle, freestyle and Greco-Roman the same year.

Thomas Gilman of Nebraska at 54 kg/119 lbs. and Zane Richards of Illinois at 58 kg/127.75 lbs., won Junior Nationals freestyle titles in Fargo, N.D. this summer. Jordan Rogers of Washington, who will wrestle at 76 kg/167.5 lbs., was a Junior Nationals runner-up. Rogers was second at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games.

Joining Volk as Cadet Nationals freestyle champions in Fargo this year was Tommy Thorn of Minnesota, who is competing at 46 kg/101.25 lbs.

Serving as coach of the team is 1976 Olympic champion and 1972 Olympic silver medalist John Peterson of Comstock, Wis., along with National Freestyle Developmental Coach Bill Zadick of Colorado Springs, Colo.

Eight of the nine athletes on the women’s freestyle team were champions at the Body Bar FILA Cadet Nationals in Kissimmee, Fla. this summer. Many of the members were also successful at other competitions this season.

This will be the first time that FILA will have hosted a Cadet World Championships since 1999.
