Vote for Clarissa Chun Vote for Jordan Burroughs Vote for the Women’s Junior World Team Representing USA Wrestling in men’s freestyle is Jordan Burroughs, who won a gold medal at the Outstanding Ukrainian Wrestlers Memorial in Kiev, Ukraine on July 28. Burroughs won five bouts in the World Championships tuneup event. Representing USA Wrestling in women’s freestyle is Clarissa Chun, who won a gold medal at the Poland Open in Poznan, Poland on July 30. Chun had four wins in this World Championships tuneup event. The U.S. Women’s Junior World Team placed third in the Junior World Championships in Bucharest, Romania, July 28-29. SportsMan of the Month for July 2011 Sport: Freestyle wrestling Athlete: Jordan Burroughs Position: 74 kg/163 lbs. in freestyle wrestling Burroughs won a gold medal at 74 kg/163 lbs. at the Outstanding Ukrainian Wrestlers Memorial International on July 28. This is an important tuneup event for the 2011 World Championships in September. He won five matches on the way to the title. He opened with a victory over Ilgiz Jakupbekov of Kyrgyzstan, then stopped Zelim Perisayev of Russia, 3-1, 4-0. In the quarterfinals, he stopped Giya Chikhladze of Ukraine, 2-1, 5-0, then defeated Musa Martazaliev of Armenia, 1-0, 4-1 in the semifinals. Burroughs came out aggressively, firing in with a barrage of leg attacks to roll past Alibek Agbayev of Russia 3-1, 6-0 in the freestyle finals at 74 kg/163 lbs. Burroughs won his first international title on the Senior level, just four months after winning his second NCAA title for Nebraska. He will compete in his first World Championships in September in Istanbul, Turkey. SportsWoman of the Month for July 2011 Sport: Women’s Freestyle Wrestling Athlete: Clarissa Chun Position: 48 kg/105.5 lbs. in women’s freestyle wrestling Chun captured the Poland Open women’s freestyle title at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. on July 30 in Poznan, Poland. This is a major tuneup event for the 2011 World Championships in September. Chun swept Germany’s Jaqueline Schellin 1-0, 3-0 in the finals in Poland. Schellin won a Junior World bronze medal in 2010. She opened with a victory over Liliana Santos of Portugal, 3-0, 4-0, then stopped Melanie Lesaffre of France, 3-0, 3-2. In the semifinals, Chun pinned Russia’s Alina Moreva in 1:27. Chun, a 2008 Olympian and World champion, will compete at the World Championships in September in Istanbul, Turkey. Team of the Month for July 2011 Sport: Women’s freestyle wrestling Team: 2011 U.S. Women’s Junior World Team The United States placed a strong third as a team in women’s freestyle at the 2011 Junior World Championships in Bucharest, Romania. Team USA was tied in second with Russia with 46 points, but Russia won the tiebreaker with more individual champions. Japan won the tournament with 59 points. Team USA finished with four medals, two silvers and two bronzes. Winning Junior World silver medals were Helen Maroulis at 55 kg and Adeline Gray at 67 kg. It was a third career Junior World medal for Maroulis and a second career Junior World medal for Gray. Winning Junior World bronze medals were Erin Golston at 44 kg and Alli Ragan at 63 kg. Placing fifth after losing her bronze-medal bout was Victoria Anthony at 48 kg.
