RADOM, Poland – The U.S. Greco-Roman Team fell short of winning a medal at the Pytlasinski International on Saturday.
Five members of the 2011 U.S. World Team competed in the event on Saturday. American Dremiel Byers won a bronze medal in the event on Friday.
The U.S. competed in Poland as it continues to prepare for next month’s World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey.
Americans Joe Betterman, Jake Fisher and Justin Ruiz each won their first two matches before suffering quarterfinal losses. None of the wrestlers who defeated U.S. competitors were able to advance to the finals, eliminating the three Americans from the tournament.
Betterman dropped a decision to Iran’s Papi Abdolmohammed. The Iranian finished third on Saturday. He placed third in the 2011 Asian Championships.
Fisher fell in the quarterfinals to Neven Zugaj of Croatia. Zugaj finished third on Saturday. Zugaj placed eighth at the 2010 World Championships.
Ruiz lost in the quarterfinals to Russia’s Nikita Melnikov in a match that went three periods. Melnikov finished third on Saturday. Melnikov beat Ruiz in the finals of the Grand Prix of Slovenia earlier this year. He also won a bronze medal in the Ivan Poddubny Tournament this year.
Justin Lester and Spenser Mango, both wrestling up a weight class, dropped their opening matches.
Mango fell to past Finland’s Jarkko Ala-Huikku 0-1, 1-0, 0-1 at 60 kg/132 lbs. The Finland wrestler placed fifth in the World in 2007 and has won the European Championships.
Lester dropped a three-period decision to Emilian Todorov of Bulgaria at 74 kg/163 lbs. Todorov placed 10th in the 2010 World Championships. Lester beat Todorov in the quarterfinals of the Dave Schultz Memorial International at 66 kg in February.
