RADOM, Poland – Dremiel Byers won a bronze medal in Greco-Roman wrestling at the Pytlasinski International on Friday.

Byers downed Bulgaria’s Ivan Ivanov 1-0, 0-1, 1-0 in the bronze-medal match at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Byers spun behind Ivanov for a third-period takedown to score the eventual winning point. Byers gained the takedown just before time ran out in the 90-second segment of the period.

Ivanov is a past World University bronze medalist, Junior World silver medalist and Olympian.

Byers, a past World champion, won his first three matches of the tournament before falling to 2009 Junior World bronze medalist Darzi Barhir Babjanzadeh of Iran in three periods in the semifinals.

Byers will seek his fourth World medal at next month’s World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey.

"Dremiel dug deep to score with five seconds left," U.S. National Coach Steve Fraser said. "When Dremiel moves on his feet, he is unstoppable. This is an area we will be focusing on in the final stretch before the World Championships."

American Cheney Haight dropped his first match to Alo Toom of Estonia 2-0, 2-0 at 84 kg/185 lbs. Toom fell short of reaching the finals, eliminating Haight from the tournament. Toom is a past World University bronze medalist.

The other five U.S. World Team members are scheduled to compete in Greco-Roman on Saturday.

Two-time World bronze medalist Justin Lester, World bronze medalist Justin Ruiz, Olympian Spenser Mango, and past World Team members Joe Betterman and Jake Fisher are set to wrestle on Day 2 of the event.

Lester and Mango have bumped up a weight class for the event. Lester will move up to 74 kg/163 lbs. from his normal class of 66 kg/145.5 lbs. Mango will compete at 60 kg/132 lbs., one division above the 55 kg/121 lbs. he typically competes in. Betterman will be at 60 kg, Fisher at 74 kg and Ruiz at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.
