POZNAN, Poland – World champion Clarissa Chun won a gold medal and Olympian Ali Bernard captured a bronze medal at the Poland Open on Saturday.

Chun swept Germany’s Jaqueline Schellin 1-0, 3-0 in the finals at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. Schellin won a Junior World bronze medal in 2010.

“Clarissa won the competition and I feel that was important, but she needs to let herself open up and flow a little bit more,” U.S. National Coach Terry Steiner said. “She is thinking too much – Clarissa has so many ways to score points and today she didn't show many of them. She is a great talent and needs to let that all out.”

“It wasn't her best performance, but she still found a way to win,” said Keith Wilson, Chun’s coach. “She will be ready for the Worlds.”

Bernard downed Norway’s Maja Erlandsen in the bronze-medal bout at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. Bernard won the first period over World champion Stanka Zlateva of Bulgaria in the semifinals before dropping the match 5-0, 0-1, 2-3.

Chun and Bernard will compete at the World Championships in September in Istanbul, Turkey.

The U.S. men’s freestyle team received fifth-place finishes from Nick Simmons and Josh Churella at the Ziolkowski International. That event was held simultaneously with the Poland Open on Saturday.

Simmons pulled off two huge wins in his first two matches before finishing fifth at 55 kg/121 lbs.

Simmons, who has made his first World Team, opened by recording a first-period pin against past World champion and Olympic bronze medalist Radoslav Velikov of Bulgaria. He followed with a three-period win over 2009 World silver medalist Sezar Akgul of Turkey. He then lost to Vladislav Andreyev of Belarus in the quarterfinals.

Andreyev placed third in the European Championships and second in the Dave Schultz Memorial International this year.

Simmons beat Spain’s Francisco Sanchez before falling to Iran’s Farzad Jafari in the bronze-medal match. Jafari placed third in the Habibi & Abdollah Movahed Cup in 2010 and eighth in the 2008 Junior World Championships.

Churella placed fifth at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. He fell to Serafim Barzakov of Bulgaria in three periods in the bronze-medal match. Barzakov, 36, is a two-time World champion and Olympic silver medalist.

The tournament concludes on Sunday with competition again in men’s and women’s freestyle.
