KIEV, Ukraine – Jordan Burroughs won a gold medal, Trent Paulson earned a bronze medal and Reece Humphrey landed a spot on the U.S. World Team at the Outstanding Ukrainian Wrestlers Memorial International on Sunday.

Burroughs (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) continues to excel in a year in which he has won an NCAA title, the Hodge Trophy, the U.S. Open and the U.S. World Team Trials.

Burroughs came out aggressively, firing in with a barrage of leg attacks to roll past Alibek Agbayev of Russia 3-1, 6-0 in the freestyle finals at 74 kg/163 lbs. Burroughs won his first international title on the Senior level, just four months after winning his second NCAA title for Nebraska.

"So much for saying Jordan Burroughs doesn't have international experience," U.S. Assistant National Coach Brandon Slay said. "He dominated his first international tour and proved he is a force to reckon with on the World stage."

Humphrey (Columbus, Ohio/New York AC) placed fifth in the event and Shawn Bunch (Columbus, Ohio/Gator WC) fell short of placing at 60 kg/132 lbs. In order for Bunch to make the U.S. World Team, he needed to win a medal in this event and place higher in the standings than Humphrey.

That needed to occur since Humphrey defeated Bunch in the finals of the U.S. World Team Trials on June 10 in Oklahoma City.

Bunch qualified for this opportunity under new U.S. freestyle criteria, which recognizes international performances. Bunch won the Medved International in Belarus to meet this criteria.

Humphrey lost his first match to eventual finalist Yevgen Khavilov of Ukraine before rebounding for wins over Vasyl Fedoryshyn of Ukraine and Rizvan Gadzhiev of Belarus. He then fell to Gevorg Terteriya of Russia in the bronze-medal match.

Bunch also lost to Terteriya, but was eliminated from medal contention when Terteriya lost to Khavilov in the semifinals. Khavilov went on to win the title at 60 kilos.

Paulson (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) bounced back from a loss to Agbayev to win three straight matches in the repechage at 74 kg/163 lbs. Paulson beat Moldova’s Alexander Burca, American Andrew Howe and Kazakhstan’s Abdulkhakim Shapiyev in succession to capture the bronze.

Paulson swept Howe 2-0, 1-0 in a matchup of past NCAA champions. Howe (Cedar Lake, Ind./New York AC) has placed second in the U.S. World Team Trials the past two years. Paulson made the 2009 World Team at 66 kg/145.5 lbs.

"Team USA is improving, and we are gaining valuable experience that will pay off for many years down the road," Slay said. "In general, we fought hard today, but we must learn to keep wrestling entire periods to reach our full potential and secure more medals."
