KIEV, Ukraine – The U.S. had two men’s freestyle medalists at 84 kg/185 lbs. at the Outstanding Ukrainian Wrestlers Memorial International on Saturday.

Raymond Jordan (Tempe Ariz./Sunkist Kids) won a silver medal and Jon Reader (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) won a bronze medal, both at 84 kg/185 lbs.

Jordan won four straight matches to reach the finals, where he was beaten by past World champion Ibrahim Aldatov of Ukraine in the championship match, 0-1, 0-1.

Jordan’s wins came against Mack Lewnes of the USA, Murad Ramazanov of Russia, Zhanbolat Magzumov of Kazakhstan and Jon Reader of the United States.

Reader won his first three matches, then dropped the semifinal match to Jordan. He rebounded to beat Murad Ramazanov of Russia in the bronze-medal bout, 5-2, 4-1.

"The 84 kg class was our bright spot of the day,” said Assistant National Freestyle Coach Brandon Slay. “Raymond and Reader medaled in a very tough weight class filled with World Champions and Medalists. Raymond lost 1-0, 1-0 to multiple time World Medalist Aldatov from Ukraine, and Reader's only loss was to Raymond in semis. Reader had a fantastic day and looked very impressive."

Three U.S. wrestlers placed fifth. They were:
- Phil Simpson, Colorado Springs, Colo. (U.S. Army) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs.
- Keith Gavin, Bethlehem, Pa. (Lehigh Valley AC) at 84 kg/185 lbs.
- Tervel Dlagnev, Columbus, Ohio (Sunkist Kids) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.

"The most exciting match of the day was Keith Gavin's win over 2009 World Champion Sokiev from Uzbekistan. Gavin finished fifth," said Slay.

Simpson won his first three bouts to reach the semifinals, then dropped his last two matches to place fifth. He was defeated in a bronze medal bout by Eldar Nazhmudinov of Russia, 0-2, 6-3, 0-1.

Gavin also reached the semifinals with three wins, then dropped his last two bouts. His semifinal loss was to past World champion Ibrahim Aldatov of Ukraine. He was defeated in the bronze-medal round by Gadzhymurad Nurmagamedov of Armenia, 0-2, 0-1.

Dlagnev, a 2009 World bronze medalist, lost in the first round to Olympic and World champion Artur Taymazov of Uzbekistan, 0-1, 1-1. He fell in the bronze-medal bout to Oleksandr Khotsyanovskyy of Ukraine, 0-3, 5-0, 0-1.

More U.S. athletes will compete on Sunday. Included are the two U.S. athletes in 60 kg/132 lbs. who will be wrestling for a spot on the U.S. World team: Reece Humphrey and Shawn Bunch.
