Moody, Akui continue Triple Crown pursuit as Junior Nationals freestyle competition kicks off

FARGO, N.D. – Nkosi Moody and Jahwon Akui of Illinois arrived here with the intention of capturing a USA Wrestling Junior Nationals Triple Crown.

They remain on track to achieve this impressive feat.

Moody won his first two bouts at 98 pounds and Akui went 4-0 at 189 as the Junior Natioinals freestyle competition kicked off on Thursday at the FargoDome.

Moody and Akui won Junior Nationals Folkstyle titles in April in Cedar Falls, Iowa before capturing Junior Nationals Greco-Roman titles on Tuesday in Fargo.

Akui was named Outstanding Wrestler of the Junior Nationals Greco tournament at 171. The Iowa Central recruit has bumped up to 189 for the freestyle event here in Fargo.

Junior competition will resume at 9 a.m. Friday in Fargo. The Junior finals have been rescheduled for Saturday and will start at 10 a.m.

Past Junior Nationals freestyle champions Matt Garelli of Illinois (105), Ruben Navejas of Washington (112), Alex Dieringer of Wisconsin (160) and Morgan McIntosh of California (215) made it through the first day unbeaten.

Dieringer, an Oklahoma State recruit, won a Junior Nationals Greco-Roman title two days ago.

2011 Junior Nationals Greco champions who also went unbeaten on Thursday include Rossi Bruno of Florida (125), Kevin Norstrem of Florida (130), Utah’s Jacob Falk (145), Devin Peterson of Wisconsin (189) and Adam Coon of Michigan (215).

2011 Junior Nationals Folkstyle champions who also went unbeaten on Thursday include Minnesota’s Jarred Oftedahl (105), Wisconsin’s Hunter Weber (125), Iowa’s John Meeks (135), Minnesota’s Jake Short (140), Minnesota’s Nick Wanzek (152), Iowa’s Alex Meyer (160), Illinois’ Gage Harrah (189), Illinois’ Austin Marsden (285) and Iowa’s Cody Krumwiede (285).

Marsden moved up to 285 for freestyle after winning Junior Folkstyle Nationals at 215.

Past Cadet and FILA Cadet Nationals champion Thomas Gilman of Nebraska (119) went undefeated in Junior freestyle on Thursday. Gilman will compete in the Cadet World Championships next month in Hungary.
