U.S. wins Austria Ladies Open with four individuals champions

U.S. WOMEN'S JUNIOR WORLD TEAM WINS SENIOR EVENT IN AUSTRIA LED BY CHAMPIONS KELLY, HUTCHINSON, TOMEO AND MONTGOMERY 

The United States Women's Junior World Team brought home a team championship from the Austrian Ladies Open in Gotzis, Austria, June 23-24. This is a major Senior level event.

The U.S. claimed four individual champions, one runner-up, two third place finishers and one fourth place finisher at the event.

Mary Kelly (Mahomet, Ill./unattached) claimed a gold medal at 101.25 pounds as did Melina Hutchinson (Soldotna, Alaska/Alaska WC) at 112.25 pounds, Erin Tomeo (Volant, Penn./TAPS) at 123.25 pounds and Toccara Montgomery (Cleveland, Ohio/ Sunkist Kids) at 149.75 pounds.

Dominique Smalley (Iowa City, Iowa/Dave Schultz WC) lost to four-time world champion Christine Nordhagen of Canada in the finals at 165.25 pounds to claim a silver medal.

Nine countries participated in the tournament. The U.S. won the event by 16 points over second place finisher, Canada. Third and fourth places went to Austria and Germany, respectively.

The U.S. entered the tournament as a tune-up event for the 2000 Junior World Team Championships in Nantes, France, July 3-9.
