FARGO, N.D. – Two of the top young wrestlers in the country kicked off a historic night for women’s wrestling in grand fashion.

Twins Marina and Regina Doi of California earned titles in the first two weight classes at the inaugural Cadet Nationals for women’s freestyle on Saturday night at the FargoDome.

Marina Doi won the championship at 88 pounds and Regina Doi followed by capturing the gold medal at 95. California teammate Jasmine Mendoza earned the title at 132.

The Doi sisters won FILA Cadet Nationals titles earlier this season and will compete in the FILA Cadet World Championships in Szombethely, Hungary, on Aug. 25-28.

“Once you get the butterflies out, it’s just another match,” Marina Doi said. “This is good preparation for the Cadet World Championships. We have a camp coming up, and we will know what it’s like and what it takes to be the best.”

Hawaii’s Bree Rapoza won by fall in the finals at 115. Rapoza was named Outstanding Wrestler. Hawaii won the team title with California finishing second and Texas third.

Ten women’s champions were crowned as the 41st annual ASICS/Vaughan Junior and Cadet Nationals kicked off on Saturday. The eight-day event runs through next Saturday with competition in freestyle, Greco-Roman and women’s freestyle.

Indiana’s Kayla Miracle recorded a first-period pin to earn the title at 108. Miracle won the FILA Cadet Nationals earlier this year to earn a trip to the FILA Cadet Worlds. She was named an ASICS First Team All-American this year.

Wyoming’s Virginia Burkett won by fall in the finals at 143. Burkett also has qualified for the FILA Cadet Worlds, but will not compete because of an injury.

Colorado’s Cody Pfau won the title by technical fall at 101. New York’s Rosemarie Flores won by fall at 124.

Flores is the first athlete from the Beat the Streets program in New York to win a USA Wrestling National title.

Michigan’s Autumn Rux won by fall in the finals at 154. Kierra Boyce of Texas was the champion at 198.

Day 2 of the Junior and Cadet Nationals is set for Sunday in Fargo. The Cadet Greco-Roman competition is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Sunday.
